I think I'll vote for the Linke-Hoffmann R.I as really and truly being the ugliest. It looks even worse than something you might expect in an Our Gang comedy short. It's not even innovative with the placing of motors like some of the others ... it's just fat and unlikely ever to get in the air ...

I love the Stirling, it is not ugly, and almost everybody belive it did not perform well. It did, theyre crew liked this plane and reported it to be a very responsive plane.

I always thought that French planes of the 20s and 30s had all the weirdness and uglyness records (I love all of them though, I'm afraid I have some odd taste for strange planes :-[)
But since Gerax has taken most of them, I think that this other one deserves a place of honour:

The British Tarrant Tabor.
The awful R-1 at least flew a couple of test flights (crashing in both), but this British monster crashed in its maiden flight in front of a lot of public because they loaded its nose with extra weight thinking that would make it more stable.

In that moment was the biggest bomber ever constructed, but arrived in 1919, too late for WWI. Anyway, I was thinking to request this and other of these monsters that deserve the chance to fly even virtually. I'd love if someone made a mod of this and we could try to finally take off with it...or shoot it down. ;D

Performance and ugliness are unrelated  :P

Personnally, I do not find the Stirling is an ugly plane... even if it has short wings (due to the requirement it was made on : teh administration wanted the plane to enter in the hangars they had in that time...) !

I'm surprised that the LWS-6 Zubr hasn't been mentioned yet:

  http://www.aviastar.org/air/poland/lws-6.php

Ugly as a 3-day-old roadkilled opossum, an engineering catastrophe, dangerous to fly and useless in its intended role as a bomber. A gristly failure by any standard, and a blot on the reputation of an otherwise solid pre-WW2 Polish aircraft industry.

Gerax, just joking - they were all ugly enough to be worthy.

And Purs that lws-6 is definitely a contender.

aahahahhahahauhhr. I just had a chill go down my spine.

Ive always thought the He 177 grief took the cake as far as ugliness goes.

At least most other planes have some redeeming elegance or grace to accompany the ugliness.  This thing looks like a giant toilet paper tube with wings slapped on as an afterthought.
