F9F-1 original prototype
« on: February 20, 2012, 09:46:17 PM »

While reading about the F9F Panther, I saw that it had been designed originally to use 4 Westinghouse 19-B-2B (Navy J30) axial-flow jet engines buried in wings that spanned 55.7ft. That would be hard to land on a carrier! So I thought that it was interesting and here's the request.
Couldn't find any pics though because when they had started building it, the good ol' Brits sent over a few Rolls Royce Nenes and Grumman built the rest of the plane around the new engine. My guess is that the F9F-1 would have looked like an F2H Banshee with a higher elevator (like the F9F-2 has now), with an extra engine in each wing root. The FM could just be tweaked from the Panther, a bit slower, less loadouts, heavier, and less reliable.

Here's the picture:http://www.aviastar.org/pictures/usa/mcdonnel_banshee.gif

Sorry, there is very little info about this plane. I guess that the gun armament would have bee the same, but again, I found no pictures. As I said earlier, it probably would have inferior performance to the F9F-2. The performance may have been the same as the 262A-1/a, if not slightly faster and a bit more maneuverable.

very little info for it....yeah, that makes sense, as it was only a prototype.
we've had discussions about this sort of weird, one-off type planes before, and the general conclusion is that no modder is likely to spend time on it.
if someone does, good for you, but i wouldn't hold my breath.
generally, there's a good reason why there is little or no info available, because it's a plane which only did maybe one or two test flights, and was binned.
take it as a general rule for future requests - if there is little to no info on a specific plane, especially good 3d plans/ pictures, don't even bother formally requesting it. ;)

and, as we carry these planes into combat, prototypes , i would not want to fly them at all.
they are test aircraft, and their systems often break when i most need them...

Who was that American Pilot that said:

never fly the "XF", "YF" or"A" model of anything!

Seems to me that someone was working on an F2H a few years ago and then dropped it over at the old AAA. Looked a lot like this.

one 163 pilot got sprayed by the fuel (which was corrosive) after being shot in the fuel tank, and he literally disolved to death.

we already have enough panther variants in the works. it would be nice to see an FH-1.
