Guys, you can have flares for any reason at anyplace and anytime. Doorbell rings, flare. Time to walk the dog, flare. Time to quit the game and go to sleep FAST, flare (in the cockpit)  ;D.
Seriously, the question is: Why, or rather, under which circumstances/coonditions do you want a takeoff go/no-go flare to be fired?
As I said, flares in reaction to ATC radio calls don't make any sense, and I won't do them. Therefore, let's develop what could be an appropriate way to let ATC know that you'd like to takeoff (without calling in on the radio), and I will try to make it happen.

Something like Player has chocks/brakes set, 100% throttle for xx seconds triggers go/no go flare?

What about switching on navlights?

Nav lights on/off three times?

Id say landing lights...but not everyone has them.

This is just for the launch right? Still using wing waggle for landing?

That's right, wing wiggle for landing.
Stupid question. How was it done IRL, I mean the takeoff flare? How did crews signal they were ready?

I'm not sure. I always imagined it as something for the alert fighters on standby.

Which brings me to another question.

Could you have a flare for scramble?
Maybe key it when the siren goes off, or enemy aircraft within a certain range?

I can already see the mission. Sitting in the cockpit of my beloved 109, canopy open, engine off.
Then a red flare launches as the air raid siren starts to play. Then across the screen the radio message ALARMSTART!!! Bomber's heading 270 @ 3000.
Close the canopy, taxi to runway and go to meet the enemy!
Horrido!

I'm asking for take off flare because they can reproduce the early aviation age when planes don't have radio to ask permission and was the control tower that give them clearance!

The triggers for the flares could be the chocks release or a time setting after spawn....anyway a nice idea the scramble flare too....

@CWMV:
No no no, radio message involved...no need for a flare.

Chokes away should be doable. Easier still with a timer. What about: Request for takeoff is triggered every two minutes after spawning. Initial
delay is two minutes as well by default, but can be customized in the [Mods] section of a mis file?

Have to have a vector to intercept!

Back on topic though...Im still interested to know how they requested takeoff without radio? Hand signals?

As said earlier, I don't think the aircraft asked for permission as such, I believe they waited until the control room told them to take off, as they would have the bigger picture of the air situation.

I think a preset time after mission launch would be good

I can remember watchin a film of B-17s taking off. There was no comms between the Tower and any particular a/c, each followed their neighbour from the hard point to the runway. When the threshold was clear the next a/c would turn on to the runway and await a green flare from the Tower before revving up and taking-off.

I've always believed the comms silence was because of the sheer number of a/c moving on the ground - the airwaves could get full of confusing instructions especially if someone left the switch on when if shouldn't be. Each a/c was responsible for it's clearance from the a/c in front.

From the films I've watched over the years, both actual and fictional, I'm pretty sure that flares were extensively used by the allies for take-off/landing procedures.

Cheers - Redfox
