As an addendum to my previous post - not all runways are particularly flat and the Tower can't always see both ends of the runway. One particular runway I'm thinking off the Tower doesn't have a visual on the southern threshold and can't see the eastern half of of the east-west cross-runway.

Even in the eighties ATC vans were placed at these thresholds, in case any ground movements out of sight of the tower would impede a/c landings. They didn't fire green flares as a final confirmation of safe-to-land but they did have the authority to fire a red flare if there was any impediment to landing.

About trigger by time I believe that if it can be modified by [MODS] section in conf.ini it can be set by every user as their personal taste (for someone that use complex engine management a couple of minute can a good amount of time but for simple enigne management it can be too long).

Try this:

https://www.mediafire.com/?bzla8bat8jv24c5

Be warned, it's untested.
Basically the same wing waggle landing flare as before, but now added takeoff logic:

If at the start of a mission the game engine sense gears are not on ground, takeoff logic is turned off immedeatly and flare behaves as before.
If engine does sense gears on ground at the beginning of a mission, it will wait for two minutes, then check whether player is cleared for takeoff or not and fire green/red flare accordingly. If not cleared, it will continue to perform the same check every two minutes.
Once player was cleared, a green flare is fired and the takeoff logic becomes deactivated.

That's how it works in theory (I hope ;) ). Practice, that's for you to find out, don't have time to test.

Just tested your take-off logic. After 2minute wait and clear for take-off flares are fired continuously.

Update:- Same for landing pattern. After wing waggle - landing flares are fired continuously.

Nevermind, sputnik old boy! This will be great when the bugs are ironed out.

On conditions when flares were fired on T/O, with the RAF at least, they were usually fired from or near the tower when a squadron was about to T/O- not usually used for a single a/c. On landing a flare would be fired to signal a 'no go', but again, unusual in normal conditions for a single a/c.

Love the new lighting, btw.

Not unusual at all for a 'no-go' flare to be fired for a single a/c. We are talking about wartime conditions here, bombers and fighters might take off as a squadron but depending on what type of action they encountered would rarely come back as a unit. Just think of the BoB with fighters split all over the place, losing contact with the flight leader, straggling back on their own. Damaged bombers lumbering back late etc.....

Yeah, that's not what I meant- obviously a single aircraft that wasn't in communication with the tower that was attempting to land, and the runway was a no-go, or the aircraft didn't have its gear down, would get a red flare- what I mean is, as normal communication, like anytime an aircraft was in the vicinity of an airfield, and happened to waggle its wings, you wouldn't send up a flare- in wartime you would be firing them off constantly! There's a bit in the film 'Battle of Britain' where a Spitfire is attempting to land with its wheels up, and the CO comes running out of the watch office and fires a red flare to give him the go around, but you wouldn't get a flare to clear you for landing. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

No problem Thunda - I think we're on the same wavelength now.

Remember that in BoB Spitfire have the radio set installed and anyway a fault radio can cause the need to make the plane identifiable as friendly....moreover some planes have make landings on enemy fields....
