"Meat Ball" Request
« on: March 02, 2012, 11:37:30 PM »

I am wondering if, given that the Team Daidalos has developed a functioning ILS in the 4.11 version, how far of a stretch would it be for someone to reverse engineer that to represent a Mirror Landing System on the angled deck carriers that we are seeing today? I doubt that it would be necessary to take into account the pitch of the deck, since it is so slight relative to the horizon. If the game can determine a plane's position relative to the vertical and horizontal planes of an ILS and present that in an instrument on the panel, it shouldn't be too far of a stretch of the imagination to wonder if it would be possible for the game to show a plane's position relative to a horizontal plane (the glide slope) on a mirror landing system on a carrier deck. With the advent of the later model jets, this mirror landing system would be an awesome contribution to the game!  ;)

The quick and easy way to do it would be with model geometry on the carrier. If you have a light or coloured vertical plate with a series of splitter plates perpendicular or at a  slight angle to the back plate then the coloured section will only be visable from certain angles, get the angle of the plates right and it could work as a "Meatball". Hope that makes sense.

That makes perfect sense. Sort of like a VASI light. It would need to be fairly bright in order to be of any real use to a pilot out in the groove though.
