One of the last ETO Nightfighters not already created ;-)
« on: March 09, 2012, 01:33:41 PM »

Hallo

After Sputnickshock created nearly all missing ETO Nightfighter, one type is still missing  ;)

The heaviest armed Nightfighter of WWII !    The .....

Do-217N

4x 2cm canons     +     4x 13 mm machineguns   + 4x 7,92 mm machineguns  +   4x 2 cm canons as "Schräge Musik"  +   13 mm +7,9 mm def. machinegun

delivers a really heavy punch of firepower    ;) !

Perhaps somebody is interested in creating this beast for IL-2 ?

Wonder who that might might be...;D

From 'German Aircraft of WWII':
"The Dornier Do217N Although too slow, at 515 km/h, to catch the British Mosquito, the Do 217N was a very good weapon against the large enemy night bombers, with its forward machinegun armament of four 20 mm MG 151/20 and four 7.9 mm MG 17, to which up to four MG 151/20 were added later, firing obliquely upward."

Pretty effective bomber killer. :)

Edit: didn't see your post Sputnik', maybe someone else will try it :)

Its main problem was low climb rate, more than speed, and about fire power, one of them  had six MG 151/20 firng upwards. Somne of these aircrftas seem to have been used in inturding mission, flying near the brithis arifieldds to catch the bombers in its coming home, and using small bombs to atack these airfileds, too, but I´m not sure if this is exact.

Oh, 1 bomber per sortie is a good rate...I mean RL wasn't like Il2 where you become "ace in a day" everytime you play...A pilot would be happy to have one bomber per sortie I guess  ::)

and make it down alive... in darkness, with nightfighter mosquitoes around and stuff.
Nerves of steel...

RAF bombers usually travlled at a cruising speed in mid 300s (kph TAS), which is roughly 260kph IAS at typical altitude.
Now, a Do 217 could do THAT!

and add the eventual kills that you had before starting your nightfighter career...if you're skilled enough to shoot 1 per day then you surely have already 100+kills from before defense of the Reich...now during say one and a half year you shoot one bomber per sortie, at lets say 2 or 3 sorties per week (no idea of the real frequencies)...you are Hartmann3  :P cause bombers count 3 times more than fighters (at least for the LW)  ;D

You can go further. I pilot would be happy to see a bomber per sortie. WW2 nightfighting was a cat and mouse game, and one of the biggest difficulties was actually finding the bombers. And I don't even mean finding it when you're close, which was difficult enough with primitive longwave radar and no visual clues in the sky, but finding it somewhere over the continent or the North Sea. We are talking hundreds of kilometers.

I enjoy flying nightfighter missions in Il2, its thrilling, but in no way I would like to be in a 110G4, he219, ju88g or something similar in RL and real night ! Expecting a mossie to appear behind you any moment...and trying to find the enemy in a huge airspace... ah... gänsehaut  :P
