I feel silly asking this, but ever since American CVL's were put into the available ships, it's been bugging me that they look a little funny. From what I read, the gun tubs were filled quite differently. Most CVL's carried a mix of dual 40, and single 20. The original 5 inchers that were on the bow and stern were always replaced with quad 40's. Another thing that is a little off, is the deck seems to extend too far over the bow.
I may be nit-picking here, but I had an uncle on CVL-23, so I've studied them over the years. I realize that the CVL's that we have probably took a lot of work, so I don't want to complain too much.
My uncle was quite a live one. I remember tales from him on the gun crew of the dual 40's. He transferred off the ship a month or two before it was sunk. He also was a little lite-fingered. He brought home a little souvenir from the ship. He gave it to my dad, and my dad gave it to me. Before leaving, he managed to stuff a Princeton fire axe into his sea bag.
Yep, still got it.
