!!!!!!!!  :o :o :o :o !!!!!!!!

That's alot of information to digest. But no worries, I shall cram it all into my teeny-weeny brain. But, I do need to get back to finishing off the 3d modelling -- and with full concentration of course. I'll worry about all that Java stuff once I've finished off the actual 3d model.

Thanks for the tutorials, though. They will come in handy down the road.

Week 8:

I finished the R-1820 Cyclone Engine, the heart of this bird. There are different variations of this engine (depending on a/c type). I modeled this based on the Thai Hawk III. Also, I lavished a little more attention on the FB2C naval variant -- working on the exhaust and making sure parts fit. I also worked on the tail hook and added the indentation on the tail surface.

Next week, I'll finish up the exhaust for the Hawk III and gun tubes. I may start on the landing gear, but only if the schedule allows.

The model is looking real nice.
I am enjoying the weekly progress reports.
Nice to see it steadily taking shape.

Hi everyone,

A quick question for all. The Hawk III has oleo struts for the landing gear. The position of the wheels naturally slant when the plane is on the ground because of the bird's weight. But when the aircraft is in the air, the oleo struts stretch because of gravity, and the wheels become straight. (refer to bottom pic for ref.)

[Left Side: Plane-on-ground position  / Right side: Plane-in-the-air position]

Has anyone tried to simulate the position of the oleo struts when the plane takes off? If not, does game limitations prevent me from duplicating this effect? I'm asking because I am still deciding whether or not to attempt to animating this effect. Otherwise, I will have to render the oleo struts in a fixed on-the-ground position.

Looking forward to an answer.  Liddlemaus, out.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Note: this does not mean I won't animate the retractable landing gear. My question only refers to simulating the weight being put on the oleo struts.

Hi LiddleMaus. As the landing gear is retractable, people would only see it briefly. So there is no point in making extra work for yourself. I think most players will be happy to see a Hawk III in the game.

cheers

I think it is possible somewhere in the java to have that simulated to a small degree, but I think it is best not to worry about it because as said, we only see it in the air for a very short time. Crazyflak has been working extensively on the gear damage mod and may have a better idea of what is possible.

it can definitely be done, as other planes have the oleo stretching feature (look at the landing gears of the Ju88 and Hs129 for example). It adds a very important part to the realism of the sim, because it affects ground handling.

I remember Gerd too, had been working on that streatching feature with his reworked late war Doras if i'm not mistaken. There should be a video around here, but i can't find at the moment unfortunately.

I don't think that this is an important feature, at least not in version 1.0. It can be added later. Now we just want to see this little beauty FLY!!!  :P
