Adding streams, rivers, docks to a map?
« on: April 02, 2012, 03:14:34 PM »

I am in the middle of retexturing a map, and i would like to add some more detail to docks, and add smaller streams and rivers.

The map i have been messing with is already in the game so that i do not have access to the map_c, so i was wondering a few things.

Is there any way i can add rivers to an already complete map without having access to the map_c?

I understand that rivers have to be 3 pixels wide to show up in the game, is there a way to make narrower rivers?

I seem to remember a while back that someone had made some objects to be placed in game which represented canals, streams etc, does anyone know where i may find these objects please? and if they are available in the map building version of the game?

Does anyone have any tricks to simulating docks and their infrastructure? trying to get something similar to this

any help appreciated

This is have to be done manual, some people add texture  which looks like your photo , It looks good when you are flying very high, but when you go down is looks rubish, so the trick is ,place buildings on texture where is should be, you will get 3D effect and is looks good
I am not expert :)

I recommend this website if you looking for good quality textures  ;)

MANYSH,

Thanks for the link mate, I have already applied a load of city textures to the map, I was thinking of some kind of object(s) that could be placed to simulate the waterways themselves, so that I could have fairly historical waterways all over the map, rather than generic textures.

Either that or some way to add rivers to an existing map.

Cheers again

Boomer

Thanks for the reply, I have just found a map_c for the map i was editing (oops  :-[) i must have deleted it at some time from the folder iv'e been working on, so i did not think i had a map_c for the map in question, and was therefore stumped.

Thanks again Boomer and MANYSH for your help

Reminds me of an experiment I did a year ago or so.
I created a semi transparent Wood0 texture and left the others transparent to simulate fields of sunflowers. I can't remember but I think I couldn't fly too low otherwise I would crash into the transparent Wood1, 2, 3, and 4.
Hard to see in a screenshot but ingame it looked cool though.
Because of the depth effect.

I know this is going off subject a bit, but while everyone with the knowledge is here  :).

I was wondering about the limit to building large cities, and the fps issues that arise. The map i am editing i would like to populate the cities quite heavily, now i realise this may cause a lot of slowdown so what i was thinking, is how feasible would it be to create a map with a few different actors.static files?

I have never edited a map before, but i was thinking on a large map a player usually flies from A to B attacks something, then flies back (hopefully), so at any time the majority of the map could be unpopulated with just the areas where the player is flying being populated. I was thinking if flying a bombing mission to say Berlin, then the player could install the actors.static that only had Berlin and players base populated. It would be a bit of messing about, but do you think it is workable at all? Or would it be a massive ammount of work?

Thanks for any replies

Boomer

As you mentioned trees earlier, i have a question as regards random trees. I have noticed with the map i am editing that while working in the map builder that there are random trees everywhere, do any of these dissapear when the map is loaded in game? The reason i ask is that i have random trees showing all over the water covered areas of the map, and also in the middle of roads, runways etc.

Is there anyway to stop random trees being generated in these areas?

cheers

Hey Manysh,

Thanks for the link for Flash Eart.
Every time I try a new google earth version it's always in freakin' Thai due to ip address.
So nice to see a different version in ENGLISH

Thanks again Manysh.

Thanks Boomer, that's a great help mate. One last question, you mention that trees grow everywhere in unlocked map editor FMB, but do not appear when a mission is played. Does this apply to trees on water as well mate?

So that the trees I see in the water when editing a map, will not actually show in a mission? As far as I am aware I have not touched the RGB values for water on map_t.tga

Thanks again

Thanks Boomer, checked in game and the trees have dissapeared  :), along with a few other anomalies  ;)

weird thing is, i have been experimenting with two water colours for rivers and sea, in the map builder i can get quite a nice effect, however when i play a mission on it the effect is completley different, to the point of being hardly worthwhile.

I also noticed a big fault with the water level that is also in the default map, posted in another thread.

thanks again
