head shake when a pilot is wounded
« on: April 03, 2012, 03:00:01 PM »

in il2, it would be nice to see an effect that makes the pilot "jolt" when he is hit by a bullet. in reality, if you got shot, you would probably jerk backwards from the impact of the bullet.

Agree, also if it were transmitted into feedback on the stick too!

Hell Id settle for any head shake at all at this point. TrackIR seems to negate the head shake effect completly.

But ya, getting shot hurts quite a bit...but depending on the caliber/shot placement you wont always do the "coax dance".

The idea is not bad, but it is quite difficult to deterime the exact direction of the bullet that hurted you. The way the game works is by just determining collisions between objects, but it doesn't mean that you have a relative position of the colliding object (the bullet) easy to retrieve to tell you in which direction to produce the shake of the pilot.

Kind of the RubberBand effect introduced in 4.11 could be used to move temporarily the point of view of the pilot, but basically in a "random" or estimated direction.

before the pilot gets hit, something else gets hit.
if before the pilot gets hit, the winshield/ was touched, it is coming from the front.
if the canopy was touched, its coming from the side (50/50 chance /random)
if the main fuselage  was hit, its coming from the back

then adjust the head shake accordingly?

I think it's too difficult to know the direction, so a generic shaking could be the best choice. ;)

It is possible. It depends on the "quality of a cockpit". The stock cockpit classes, have 6 possible references of the Cockpit damage state. These status are responsible of showing the holes in the windshield, which are not precise, they just appear in the zone from where the bullet came. I think that could be good enough to have a response considering that as a reference.

I think I have a good idea of how it could be implemented. If I have some time this weekend I will try to make it work.
