Shadowing on ships hull & water.

I have noticed the shadows of ships dont look as significant as those in photos, consequently they appear to "float" in space a little. To add a bit of depth and a more realistic look, can the shadows of ships be darkened and increased in the water and also on the hull itself, coming up from the surface to the deck?
