Finally solved the crazy autosmooth issue.
It was Blender's exporter to 3ds as it could not support smoothing vertex groups and such things.

After using an external open source exporter to 3ds the mesh now has not got too shiny parts.

Unfortunatelly I'm in middle of the exam time but I promise once over I'll get back to this to solve all texture/smoothing issues and give you v1.
I will also do a new UV map for superstructure as this one is only temporary.

Btw if there is anyone interested for texturing this ship, I will also upload the final UV maps(since they will change) with v1. So you can do a completely new texture if you like.

another topic about LOD distance.

IL-2 1946 can draw 10000m far from object,
and the big ships like Iowa are seen from 10000m.

So, farest LOD meters is 10000 is good in big .msh like Hull or Super Structures, Stacks.

Ok noted, will change 5000 to 10000 for last LOD.

For capital ships I have a very simple LOD5 (hull and superstructure only) with visibility out to 18000

Example: HMS Eagle

[LOD]
250
500
1250
2250
4500
18000

I test my ships in FMB 3D view how far we can see...
about 11000m or 12000m, ships become invisible, instead of LOD meters is bigger like 15000m.
Something the limitation of IL-2 1946 graphic engine - fr visibility - exist, I think.

I can't realize The exact value of that limit distance.
I feel about 11000m or 12000m.
IL-2 1946 can treat bigger value like 18000 without any error or warning in game/FMB,
we can set LOD distance we like, but that value doesn't match game visibility.

Depends on the size of the object. Large capital ships I can see on my screen out to about 20000 metres but only as a dot. Using 18000 metres is a compromise.

When I make LODS I test the view in-game with a stationary ship and marker boats set up at the LOD distances. Then I can decide which parts of the model can be removed or simplified at each distance.

My LODS currently are for the beta version

400
600
1000
5000

So I suppose I could make a very simple mesh for 15000.

IL-2 1946 3D drawing by distance sample.

at over 10000m , object's "mesh" is ignored and drawn as only a one "dot".

That's also what happens to my system.
I never can see anything but a dot after ~9000m.

But I suppose a simple mesh , eg simple a cube with a nose for final LOD would not hurt.

When I was in the Navy, we had the USS New Jersey with us out in the Gulf War in 91.  Typically on a good day we could see her approach at the horizon line.  The Iwoa class ships are just that dam big.  The horizon line is about 20 nautical miles, give or take a mile or two.  At that distance you could see this low squat wide as hell ship approaching.  When she turned broad side you immediately knew what the hell was bearing down on you.

Hope that gives you some vis range ideas for this class of ship.

Well I can't disagree with actual real life data can I?

But unfortunatelly everything bigger than 10000m and the game will convert the ship to a dot.
In other words I can put the range you talk about but the game won't show it till you reach 10km.
Can do nothing about that.

Anyway I'm now in the process of building a new UV for the superstructure and correcting smoothness issues.
