*Bump* #Update#
4670 AGP arrived. Driver installation went fine, first Catalyst driver, next AGP hotfix. I'm running Catalyst+AGP Hotfix Versions 11.1 now.
No graphics glitches noticed so far, even my old P4 3GHz runs IL-2 with perfect settings at 50-75 FPS now.

Best regards - Mike

S!

The AMD drivers have gotten better lately. I really like the 11.1's on my AMD 6970HD.

Yep, I think since 10.7 they're quite suitable for IL-2.
On my old P4 3GHz rig I can run IL-2 with maxed out settings, 4xAA and 8xAF + adaptive AA at 1024x768 (yes, it's sluggish, but that PC has a 15'' flat screen attached only, it's just for recreational purpose) without problems.
Offline I get 50~75FPS and online about 25~30FPS with a bit stuttering which doesn't bother too much.
Way beyond what my old Geforce 6200 could offer me on the same rig.

Still no luck with 11.1 and my 5870 - same issue as with all previous drivers: prop discs and glass parts not displayed sometimes, here a deglassed fortress without props...

This is because of the contrail effect, it's a known issue with some mods. ;)

santobr thank you very much for your reply...but i don't use any mods at the moment. It is a 'clean' 4.09m install!

All the best

Yep, known problem.
Regardless of mods I think its one of those smoke effects that dont do really well. If its just fighters thats one thing, but put a bunch of 4 engine bombers in the air and its gets hairy. Does the same thing with my 1GB GTX460

Maybe you want to check your console log file whether some clamp warning/error messages appear to strengthen that it's depending on the number of contrails.
The console log file is not the "eventlog.lst" file. The default file name is "log.lst".
If there's no such file within your IL-2 folder, check the conf.ini section "[Console]" for an entry "LOGFILE=log.lst" and add or alter it accordingly.

If it's a contrail issue, the log.lst should contain line similar to this:
Code: [Select]
WARNING: <...> Estimated number of particles <...> was clamped to (1 .. <...>)
INTERNAL ERROR: Str2FloatClamp() - Clamped <...> -> <...> (delta = -<...>) to Range 1..<...>

Thank you very much for your replies - it's the first time someone else states a 'known' problem. Thought i'm the only one with this issue. It's annoying me most because i really like to play (selfmade) bomber intercept missions, with large numbers of fourmots (up to 50, for the eye candy) escort fighters (about 20) and attackers (about 20) in realistic altitudes (7000 - 8000 m) with contrail effects.

I will look for this log.lst thing when i'm at home from work. Will let you know about.

Sorry mate. :)
I was thinking you are using mods. :P
When you see glitches, hit Shift+Tab and check for error messages as Storebror said. ;)

Yes santobr - i know this is a modder's forum ;D.

I'm currently thinking about modding my game...

Forgot to mention when zooming in via 'DEL' the props/glass parts are displaying...
