The Messerschmitt 309 was the big rival of the Me 262 for a short time. I think it was a better plane than the Sturmvogel.
The Me 309 was designed as a replacement for the Bf 109, already in 1940, but was assigned a low priority. The Me 309 was advanced in concept, with tricycle landing gear, a pressurized concept, and cannon armament. The Me 309 was never satisfactory, and especially the nosewheel was a weak point: many photographs show the Me 309 with its nose in the ground. Four were built before the RLM cancelled the project.
