F-18 and SU-25
« on: April 21, 2012, 06:26:17 PM »

I was thinking that I'd like to see the F-18 as an add-on for the jet era mod 1.2 (including a Su-25 frogfoot).

                               [F-18]
The U.S. Navy started the Naval Fighter-Attack, Experimental (VFAX) program to procure a multirole aircraft to replace the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, the A-7 Corsair II, and the remaining McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom IIs, and to complement the F-14 Tomcat. Vice Admiral Kent Lee, then head of Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), was the lead advocate for the VFAX against strong opposition from many Navy officers, including Vice Admiral William D. Houser, deputy chief of naval operations for air warfare – the highest ranking naval aviator.[3]
In August 1973, Congress mandated that the Navy pursue a lower-cost alternative to the F-14. Grumman proposed a stripped F-14 designated the F-14X, while McDonnell Douglas proposed a naval variant of the F-15, but both were nearly as expensive as the F-14.[4] That summer, Secretary of Defense Schlesinger ordered the Navy to evaluate the competitors in the Air Force's Lightweight Fighter (LWF) program, the General Dynamics YF-16 and Northrop YF-17.[5] The Air Force competition specified a day fighter with no strike capability. In May 1974, the House Armed Services Committee redirected $34 million from the VFAX to a new program, the Navy Air Combat Fighter (NACF),[5] intended to make maximum use of the technology developed for the LWF program.[4]

                                   [SU-25]
The Sukhoi Su-25 (NATO reporting name: "Frogfoot") is a single-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft developed in the Soviet Union by the Sukhoi Design Bureau. It was designed to provide close air support for the Soviet Ground Forces. The first prototype made its maiden flight on 22 February 1975. After testing, the aircraft went into series production in 1978 at Tbilisi in the Soviet Republic of Georgia. Russian air and ground forces nicknamed it "Grach" ("Rook").
Early variants included the Su-25UB two-seat trainer, the Su-25BM for target-towing, and the Su-25K for export customers. Upgraded variants developed by Sukhoi include the Su-25T and the further improved Su-25TM (also known as Su-39). By year 2007, the Su-25 is the only armoured fixed-wing aircraft in production except the Su-34 whose production had just started.[1] It is currently in service with Russia and various other CIS states as well as export customers.

Lets hope these fighters won't be forgotten.

Cheers.  ;)

currently these planes are to advanced for the game, but in 1-2 years they will probably be possible.

Ehem, the F-18 has already been requested twice, first of all.
Second of all, the jet era mod is for planes up to 1956... :-\
The most 'modern' jet we have atm is the F-4 Phantom, and still, it is a third generation jet from the late 50's.
Not to be harsh, but these modern planes are quite far off.
Maybe some day.
We can hope.

I can say +2 to these. RAAF is currently using modified "Super" Hornets (Rhino's) and I love the Frogfoot, very cool light jet imo. Good for light ground attack ops.  8)

I have seen these myself at RAAF base Amberly and they are AMAZING! Although I agree, the systems are far too modern to be simulated properly in our old IL-2.

in reality, the frogfoot would probably be possible, but it would be a HUGE project (especially considering how long the AMT has been working on the MiG-21).

Technically the F-22 is the most modern, though it's far from done and I don't even know if it's still being worked on.

*our most modern technology is in the F-4
The L-139 doesn't have any technology that is from after the F-4, except maybe the HUD, but that isn't fully functional yet.

Nice AC, but it's gonna be a bit outta place. There is a Midway class CV being worked on, but the most modern comblock plane I've seen is a Mig-21. I guess 4th generation has to start somewhere.
