Don't know if its planned for 4.12 but there was some talk about a general improvement in the core programming for ships.

I hope also for when a multi-crew aircraft goes down in the water!

An oil slick/patch for a sunk/sinking ship or submarine would be quite nice  :) not sure how possible it is to add a texture to water? maybe a "flat" coloured object "effect" ??

Yes, this was the video I had seen long time ago.
seems that the problems are in the online mode.
would be possible to attempt something similar for players offline only?

This would open up rescue possibilities...

Nice idea. I have to use the 'Transwreck' stationary ship object with fishing boats as life boats. Usually on the run in to the target, which is usually a shipyard target like the one below. Naturally there is lots of debris, smoke and flame and death...

Oh, by the way, this is a pic of an unfinished mission target, but suprisingly there is no more detail than one of those basic empty generic townships - it just looks busy.

I use 'destroyed' objects which don't seem to drag down fps. I have since learnt how to place ships on land which shows the propellers and hulls - now things look like a real shipyard. The ships on land only 'collapse' they don't sink and look nice burning too. :)

I did have a self-made mod that had people jumping off a destroyed ship as it sank by using the little running people in-game. When they are elevated to ship deck height they "jump down" before they run & sink in the water. Looked great, but I've lost the files :(

That sounds like a great Mod  :) The Carrier crew Mod helps with Imersion, but somehow ships are still a bit sterile, I still love the ground AA crew scattering in ZP Semireal AAA Mod  :) just a glimpse as you overflew after an attack, I imagine your ship mod would have been similar.

Anyone had any thoughts about an oil slick?

If the oil slick could be made in the same manner as a 'smoke object', but the parameters for its size, shape, density, and speed of expansion were modified to a shallow depth - so the smoke/oil slick would appear to sit on the water and not float above it!

I've seen a lots of gun camera footage of ships being hit, and another nice thing would be; when a ship gets hit there are various splashes in the water surrounding the ship from fast moving schrapnel - this happens almost instaneously, it gives a sense of the power and force of the detonation.
