Looks like it would be an awesome ride as long as you trusted the pilot not to cut you loose...

but what a price to pay!
the people in there would be high priority evacuees - using an F lightning for two people, compared to a C-47 or a Curtiss commando is one thing:
EXPENSIVE. Two merlins at high speed versus two Radials for low speed. in a combat aircraft or recce aircraft that could be used for a defensive mission to prevcent further injured personel.

take a closer look...
and the Lightning can not climb either - the sick and wounded in the Tanks have no extra oxygen, and probably cannot communicate, will freeze at 10.000 feet...

the setup is for getting two Persons out of dodge, low, fast, with no manoevering or dogfight. EXPENSIVE. and for the Pilot, depending on the strategic location, risky as clusterfunk.

so: will you get a ride in one of those when you have a hurting tooth? No. A ride in one of those, you literally pay with an arm or a leg. and no, you will be so drugged up that "awesome" is the last word you will use for the trip.

dont let yourself be fooled over the smiling nurse and all that propaganda.
Thats all bullshat, just to sell a few of these things or cheer the soldiers up or push the idea in the headquarters.

ja, I wasn't thinking in a combat wounded situation, I was more thinking if one were lucky enough to own a p-38.

Duggy thank you so much for those pictures! This is exactly what i was looking for. So are they standard p-38 tanks with a perspex or what is the verdict?

Not all of these had a window!!
But yes, they were standard tanks converted.

With the island hopping campaign in the Pacific, it became apparent that a faster way was needed too get wounded from the front line.
P-38's/F-5's were used with specially designed drop tanks, that could accommodate injured servicemen.
This was a very uncomfortable way to fly. Some of the pods weren't even fitted with a window to let the victim see out or bring in light. One fellow who hitched a lift on a P-38 in one of these pods later said that whoever designed the damn thing should have been forced to ride in it!!!

110G shame on you  " Merlins"
Although I have seen photos from Casey over at A&A, that does show a P-38 fitted with the above??

Regards Duggy

Allison is a b****.
