No, its not dead.
I heard some engines starting up in the far end of the IL2 airbase.
Engines need more oil lubrification  ;) LOL
But it might just fly one day soon, if the engines donĀ“t catch fire.
The Greif had some problems with overheating and engine fires, so I have read  :P
It was very silly to put 4 engines close together spinning only 2 propellers.

One of the few Nazi ideas which seemed good, but didn't really work out.....

This was done in two reasons:

1. The original project requested two 2.000hp powerplants. None were in production so they used two pairs of two 1.500hp DBs...
2. Luftwaffe's tactic of choice was dive bombing. EVERYTHING was expected to dive-bomb, so this was a good way of minimising drag...
Actually, most overheating problems were ironed out when dive-bombing was removed from He177 specs (A-5 onwards IIRC)

He177 was the closest LW got to strategic bomber, but they never gave much thought to strategic warfare, just like their Italian and Japanese allies, and the Russians (who were the only ones to actually pull that one off)...

During the war, the RAF tried the same concept in Avro Manchester Bomber, like in HE 177, they run virtually into the same problems, and the solutions not working, to the point the that bomber was to be cancelled, but that didn't happen, because it was modified into a 4 engines conventional configuration, and so originating WWII most famous and Best Night Heavy Bomber, The Avro Lancaster.

Wasn't the napier sabre engine (hawker empest) two conventional V-12 engines combined into an x-configuration as well?

Not the Tempest, but the Tornado.

nope, the sabre was a brand new engine. but the vulture used by manchesters and hawker tornado prototypes was a double peregrine iirc.. ***

and speaking of doubled engines..

They got it under control,  what killed it was lack of fuel .
