This highly interesting - I was unaware that Br19 equipped the Vickers K on Fairey Fast Gun Mount served outside Spain - it was supposed to have been a local version, fruit of the collaboration between Hispano and Fairey, that was to evolve till it was cut short at the Outbreak of Civil War, due to the more than ambiguous position of the UK government (not to say blatantly that they supported, and not only  than "morally", Franco's uprising)
BTW I always refrained to use the terms Br19A2 or Br19B2 are they are "functionnal" denomination - the same basic plane could be equipped in the field, using "kits" such as bomb containers, etc.., for A2 missions (A= corps d'armee = reconnaissance, armed reconnaissance and liaison) or B2 missions (B=bombardment)  - as a matter of fact there were also a number of subdivisions depending of the sub-type of mission designed - therefore the official instructions manuals emphasized the differences according to the fixed modifications such as engines, turret mount etc...

Hi,Dreamk. Like the SIS agent flying Franco around at the start of the coup? Ever since the UK owned Gibraltar, they've been concerned as to who controls the Iberian peninsular. A hostile power controlling it could mean an attack on Gibraltar, and lost access to the Mediterranean. They couldn't send an expeditionary force to help Franco. They'd become moral lepers if they did that. They'd just begun re arming against Hitler. So giving his friend support wasn't on.  They couldn't sink Russian ships bringing supplies to the Republicans. War with the [former] USSR wasn't on. They were trying to get it on side.

So, they hit on the 'Non Intervention' idea, and the League of Nations arms embargo. Spanish waters would be patrolled by League of Nations members. Ships carrying war materials to either side could be stopped, and dealt with. It hurt the Republicans more than the Nationalists. Especially after they took the ports up north. The Germans were in the Neutrality patrol. But they were very selective in enforcing it. So, the UK government got what they wanted in the end. A 'friendly' nationalist government controlling Spain, and posing no threat to Gibraltar. Not a Soviet puppet state. At that level, politics is often not a very nice business.

cheers
