Creating a B17 formation.....problems
« on: June 09, 2012, 11:55:15 AM »

I am using DBW 1.71 and am creating some heavy bomber missions in FMB using B17s.  I have created a formation of 16 bombers with the player flight of 4 as the lead element.
My problem is that when I run the mission and put it in auto pilot to observe from outside (it's an air start), my lead formation, no matter where I put it (i.e. way forward or over to the left of the main body etc) continually drifts way over to the right and does not stay with the main formation and is not following the initial flight path (waypoint).  I've double checked each flight of 4's waypoints, they are all OK.  All the other elements maintain the main formation except the "player" element.
I assumed that running the mission with the player element in autopilot that it would stick with the main formation but this doesn't seem to be the case.  I've even switched to a rear element but still get the same result.  Is this simply a game limitation or am I missing something?
Any advice is appreciated.
thanks,

UPDATE:
It turns out that the "active" flight (i.e. the human players flight), even if it is put to autopilot during a test run will not stick with the formation.  When I made all flights AI controlled they stayed together no problem at all.  That being said, if the human player is flying it will be necessary to stay off the 'autopilot' until you fly the plane into proper formation with the rest.  Even then I'm not sure 'autopilot' will keep you in formation.  It might be better to use the "level stabilizer" function while cruising but you will definitely still have to adjust the engines to avoid creeping forward or drifting back.
I hope that makes sense.
