Sonic Boom Vapor Effect?
« on: June 20, 2012, 08:16:50 PM »

Now here is a serious, but somewhat silly request.  Totally unnecessary, but could be fun.  Is this possible to do?  Probably only occurs near sea level.  I've broken the sound barrier with several of the new jets.

Sure its in, just go down to sea level and break the sound barrier :D
Jet Era readme :
Quote
For those who want to produce such an effect as seen on the next page try and break the sound barrier at altitudes lower than 5,000m. Start at 10,000m and dive at a 45 degree angle on around 80% throttle so that you don’t break the sound barrier earlier, when your mach gauge reads around 0.9 mach or if the TAS gauge reads around 1100 kmh go into external view and increase the power to 100% and you should break the sound barrier with this vapour cone effect. If you are still too high when you reach around 0.9 mach try to level off a bit or power down slowly so you can break the barrier at lower altitude.

actually, before i remove this thread, i'd like to make a few observations about this effect -
tbh, after seeing it a few times, i'm not that happy with it.
i've seen on several occasions when it kicks in while the aircraft is only doing about 650-700km/h.
also, it seems to happen way too much for my personal taste.
i'm actually going to quickly ask if there's an easy way to remove this effect, as these anomalies happen way too often, and it kinda kills the immersion factor for me, having planes constantly kicking in and out of this 'boom', while still flying at relatively sub-sonic speeds.
or if it was made to only happen on rare ocassions, i think it'd be better.
these are just my personal observations, i'm sure most guys are happy with it.

At least for the aircraft I worked on, the vapour effect should only be triggering when Mach is greater than 0.99 AND as it is, it only happens on odd occasion (the chances of it occurring increases with atmosphere density and humidity, which roughly correlates with decreasing altitude). If we were to get the effect perfect, we would need some way of calculating air humidity at altitude and a way of working out the sonic wave characteristics around the aircraft, which is frankly impossible with the Il-2 engine!!

So what we have coded currently in Jet War for the F-86 and MiG-15/17s, is about as good as we can get for now. Malone, what aircraft have you seen the effect kick in early?

Malone, are you sure that was your true airspeed? It may have just been your indicated, as the equation changes at altitude. Personally, I was never happy with the effect either (to me it appears to be more like a cloud.... well a cotton wool ball!), but I haven't noticed it happening at sub-sonic speeds at all. I wouldn't mind a version where it can be activated with the T function like it was originally in WIP, would be nice for screenshots and movies.

well, it seems to happen most often with the Phantom, at this point.
so, possibly just some tweaking of that model would sort it...
i must admit, it seems to work quite well with the MiGs i've been flying, and it doesn't really happen much with other planes, at least not too often.
maybe just that i've been flying in, and against, the Phantom quite a bit recently, that i've been noticing it.
it has definitely kicked in too early on the Phantom on several occasions.
so, yeah, i retract my previous 'blanket' statement, Anto, and guess i'm just pointing my finger at the Phantom now, lol. :D

I do notice that the ai will speed up into mach 1, go sub sonic then go back witch probibly does this.

ya ive noticed it, too. if i cruise just below mach 1, im constantly surrounded by this vapor cloud and it kills the immersion when flying the phantom.

A constant vapor seems accurate if you travel at certain constant speeds
