WIP: Retexture of LS Marcus. Late 43/Early 44
« on: June 26, 2012, 01:29:11 PM »

LoneStar gave us this cool map and its one of my pacific favorites. I was reading up on it and here is a quote from Wiki.....

"The United States Navy bombed it repeatedly in 1942 and in 1943 but never attempted to capture it."

With that I thought of what it "may" have looked like in late 43 early 44.New grass is starting grow, bombcraters are still visable and some green is starting to come back after the fires of the bombs burnt or browned everything. The crushed coral runway texture I made to look as if there would be some weeds/grass starting to grow around the airfield. I doubt in the middle of war the Japanese got out the Weed-B-Gone everyday. :) It is a little much weeds/grass but its a WIP. I'll update it later. Really there are only a few textures for this map. The land, runway and shallows. Two I made. The shallows and the runway, which like I said I'm not completely happy with yet and the third I did not make but adjusted with a photo program.
I dont know who made it originaly but I want to give him credit for it.

Here are a few pics...

And yes, I know hguderian did a retexture of this map but this is just what I envisioned for 43-44 . I know its not perfect or absolutely real looking but its just for fun. :)
Please tell me what you think. Is this a retexture any of you guys may want.

Ok, I broke out the Weed-B-Gone.:) I didnt like the way it looked on the runway so now I'm trying a look like it may have rained the night before and there are little empty water paths in the sand on top of the crushed coral runway. How does this look?......

Nice effects on the run way textures. Also interesting idea on the bomb crater effects. Could have 2 or more versions of a map to reflect the degrading effect of damage over a campaign – like Tarawa – which took a serious pounding over a short space of time.

Thanks guys. @hguderian, no his Iwo textures are more of the "black volcanic sand" too grey for an atoll like island but I may take a look at them in my photo program.
@ggrewe, thats my line of thinking. WhiteCat did the same with the Iwo map and I like the idea besides, there are only so many places where WWII was fought so, may as well try to make some of them more interesting. :)

Here is the new runway. I gave up on the extreamely detailed versions and I think I'm going to go with a plain crushed coral with a little dirt/sand mixed in. Here are a few pics....

Ok, I think I'm done. I made the jungle area a little darker and a little more green.

Now the question is.... do you guys want me to upload it? :)

Here is my opinion.
I would have to say the second version of the sand is the more realistic looking. I used to
live in a place where there was long stretches of sand, and after it rainned it looked like that.
Or mix the second version with the 3rd version of the sand. It would look very realistic.

I like the effects of the bomb craters. There should be more, ALOT more. The place was bombed
for 2 years! Have you ever noticed aerial pictures of Okinawa prior to the troops landing there?
That Island atoll was only bombed for about 2 weeks. Now imagine an Island atoll being bombed
for 2 years.
There should also only be remains of ONE standing palm-tree for every 300+ square meters. You have
too many palm trees. The bombs would have ripped apart those trees. I have seen photos and film of what Okinawa looked like before and after the Marines invaded. The whole beach area was a complete
mess. Only a few palm trees remained standing with very few leaves on them.
The water effects are STUNNING. Very realistic  8)

Thanks Max. This is only a retexture of the land and shallows. I'm not sure how to rid the plams. Maybe it should be named for a later date such as mid 44/ early 45 when the trees were recovering? :) Or, early 42 after the first bombing. :) I dont know I'm just having fun with this map. :)
