I really like this idea, I have 5 instalations of Il-2, one of them has DBW 1916 and I always felt it needed something else in naval missions.

HMS Warspite - commissioned March 1915 or thereabouts.

Rebuilt by WW2 of course, but the same ship.

The stock "Marat Battleship" is essentially a WWI design (Petropavlovsk of Gangut class) and could be used as a stand-in.

This is how it looked as originally completed:

Good idea, Maro .  The USS Ward is a WWI ship. Some of the merchies would look alright in that era. More to the point, if these are added to DBW1916, they won't affect the Java limit for the main game. Some players would like to see a DBW 1936 too. A DBW 1956 for jets would be nice too.

cheers

First, let me say I have no plans to do any WW1 ships at present,  -- but some thoughts.

Objects in general need to primarily supplement the maps/campaigns/missions which are available.
For WWI Western Front this would mean the Dover Patrol and Flanders Flotilla areas. For this the principal need is for small craft destroyers etc and possibly monitors and U-boats  ---- not capital ships.

On the Italian Front map things are a little different. The Austro Hungarian fleet had some BB's  (Tegettof Class?) but again the first priority should be small craft.

Gallipoli -- probably more opportunities for larger ships, mainly pre-dreadnoughts

Ultimately modellers will do what they are interested in but I would suggest that priority should go to smaller craft not battleships.

From the practical point of view to do a good model you need detailed plans. These are readily available for WWII subjects but maybe not so much for WWI (I don't really know but have not seen much).
Detailed plans need to include hull lines and details of each deck level including superstructure and minor gun details.

Yes, smaller ships are perhaps less sexy but actually more useful in missions, and you can actually sink them  :P.

Another thing : I think some small ships from WWI can also be useful in WWII, as cargo, monitors, coastal vessels that were new in 1917 were still there in 1939.

Maro, requests here should be more along the lines of 'what will be good for most players',
rather than an 'I need...' approach.
no modder is going to build a ship specifically for one person's needs, they will rather do something that will be popular and useful for many players.
remember that.  ;)

Well I would find this interesting for my DBW 1916 too but, it's not my main focus right now.

I agree wholeheartedly with Ash here. Perhaps small ships are less fun to look at, but they are DEFINITELY more useful.

I have built perhaps some 600-700 missions through all the years, and I've used big, hefty battleships in perhaps 2 or 3 of these. At the same time I've used the "Cargoship, dry" in probably ALL that involved some water. After that the Russian trawler with the single gun.

If you want WW1 type big vessels BTW you halso have the two Finnish armoured cruisers, Ilmarinen and Vänemöinen. So there actually ARE several WW1 era naval ships around.  :)

Creating Repainted Franken Ships would be fairly easy. It has been done a thousand times in Il-2 modding...
