Rendering of objects at altitude is a change that came in through one of the various mod packs a couple years ago.  At Warbirds of Prey, we've done lots of testing to try to improve upon high-alt. object rendering.  Rendering is improved slightly by use of larger factory buildings (what I call the Powerplant bldg, for example; the Object # differs in different packs, but it's usually about 1219-1230 and right around the two large grain-elevator buildings).  In the old days, objects such as cars inside buildings helped greatly with rendering, but not really anymore.  Through some testing, though, I found that putting a ship in a building makes it render further away.  For multiplayer, it's an immersion-killer since you are likely to have other pilots see the ship inside the destroyed building (you might destroy the building, but not the ship); but, in single-player, it might work out okay.

Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any config setting that helps with the rendering ... at least that works with all players all the time.  Sometimes, lowering the graphics setting can improve rendering of objects from high-alt, but it sometimes depends upon the underlying map.

As a result (just like in real life in WW2), you need to look for other landmarks such as rivers, lakes, coastlines, roads/RRs, etc. to help you recognize when you are nearing the target.

Heya Mack ! Thanks for the links ! I had tried your big bird campaign (and a couple of others as well) a couple years ago.

I am betting that rendering buildings for targets until your on top of it is also the reason that AAA is not activating until the bomber group is virtually over top of it. I bet it is the same problem affecting the high alt flight not getting flak until over top of the AAA. There must be a way to tweak the rendering to increase rendering range based on alt, probably in the java scripting somehwere it could be done. ie: IF flight is over xxx feet alt, then force longer render ranges. The reaosn the larger buildings and the ships work, is because they will render farther then other stuff does. Since those larger buildings have render stages, the graphics would be smaller. It shouldnt affect performance too much I wouldnt think, if render distance was increased above a certain altitude.

Actually, the reason that the AAA isn't activating until you are close is due to the location of the AAA (closer to the target on most missions).  Based upon prior testing, big-gun AAA (88mm/85mm) seems to shoot out about 6km in distance, and up to about 7000 m in altitude (if not otherwise restricted).

This might help:

...and for some motivation here's our website with recon photos, mission results from our latest online coop playthrough of the Big Bird campaign although I have seriously modified the missions so far by taking advantage of the Triggers and C&C objects.

Thanks for this, so i followed your method but in the end your campaign wouldn't show up. So i did the same thing with the original "big bird" files and it seems to work. Any idea why your folder called "B-17 Coop Campaign" won't show up under pilot carreers?

Also i compared the folders, and yours have some skins in it, where would i place them?

it will never show up in the campaign folder but you will find it in multiply then create your own server and yhen you can choose te mission to play. So it wont be a proper campaign but rather a series of individual mission. But no changes in terms of content

You need to ensure files are in the right folders.
For the campaign aspect as Frankiek says it's not really a campaign but simply a series of single missions but if you drop the B-17 Coop Campaign folder into the coop folder as follows;
C:\xxxxxxxxxx\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Missions\Net\coop\B-17 Coop Campaign then simply Create Server in Multiplayer you can still play it like a single player offline campaign
Note: the xxxxxxxxx is whatever the path to your folder is on your machine.

For Single Missions, your files go here:  C:\xxxxxxxxxxx\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Missions\Single\US\B-17  <-- unzip the B-17 Coop Campaign here (i.e. If done correctly, you should see a numbered list of missions)
e.g. 01-Ostende.mis  02-Calais.mis etc

For the skins, place them in your Paintschemes folder in the appropriate B17 model folder.
C:\xxxxxxxxxxxxx\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\PaintSchemes\Skins

cheers,
Tomoose
