About the I-15, not only wasn't affected by that problem of ignition, but they often came back to base very seriously damaged without engine failure. After SCW, the captured I-15 and I-15bis were used until the 50s with no problem.
The issue with landing is a very different thing. I don't think FM is wrong for I-15 (I don't know about I-153). Pilots often complained about the tricky to land that this plane was. They often complained about the lack of visibility downwards and to the front due to upper gull wing.
Ironically, this gull wing had been implemented as a great innovation to improve visibility during dogfights.
As a result of the bad visibility or the inexperience of many pilots, a lot of chatos crash landed, breaking undercarriage, spinning, nose landing, etc.
That's why they decided to return to the straight upper wing in I-15bis, but then pilots starting complaning again, saying that I-15 was better, that's why they came back with the gull wing again in Tchaika. Conclusion: pilots complained about everything.
