I would like to see a mod ... when I crash-land my airplane... the cockpit flips
back with such brutal force that my pilot gets his head chopped off.  :P

... then the head rolls happily across the grass  ;D *Boing*Boing*Boing*

(BTW - let´s not forget the blood splatter either)

No, that´s already been done. It happens to my pilot sometimes.
Other times he just sits in the airplane with his head blown apart  :P It´s pretty disgusting to see, but its one hell of a great realistic looking scene.  ;D

Well actually a plane with less fuel in its tanks will explode much easier than a plane filled up to the maximum capacity.

But if I understood it, wouldn't ist be the easiest way to raise the "hitpoints" of the fuselage so that only very hard crashes or a direct impact/hit would lead to an explosion and otherwise the fuselage would react like in B17 Flying Fortress The Mighty Eight?

Just an idea of someone who has no plan of modding...

In regards to altering the 'explodium' made fuselages so they act more like aluminium: I think that is entirely possible. I have not looked at it myself and am not currently volunteering to do so.

BUT let's remember this is an old game and there are obviously going to be a lot of limit to how much we can improve the damage/collision models.

I doubt that they would do it let alone manage to fit it in 4.12, but this would be especially useful for ww1 aircraft as they explode like someone has filled the fuselage with fuel and the wings with ethanol covered wood!

An idea though would be to get rod of the flames/explosions for planes going faster than x speed, and aircraft under x speed would simply have what ever hit the ground first go through the floor leaving half the aircraft above ground, like it has dug in, and ww1/not very explosive aircraft bounce and lose some parts(wing may smash of.) Then after that through updates you could make changes depending on fuel, load out and individual aircraft.

That would finally make helicopters playable, because now they're made of nitroglideryne and explode on touch.

Also it would be easier to implement and probably less demanding, albeit less hollywood like. I remember after playing IL-2 for 2 years, 4 years ago and getting Rise of flight and getting dissapointed that they didn't blow up and trying my best to make them crash nose first or catch on fire.

In 4.12, a skilled pilot can do wingtip scrapes without exploding, and that is just the wingtip.  I think that the current model is good enough for high speed crashes, but for low speed crashes we need something different.  I think that if we could have a similar explosion to the one seen in a fuel tank explosion for low speed gentle crashes, that would be nice.

For example, you are flying the brilliantly designed (but explody) Su-25, but all of a sudden, you suffer a flameout.  Being your first day playing Il-2, you settle it down pretty hard and BOOM!  However, your camera follows the maximum damaged, small flaming chunk of fuselage that contains your post-medium-rare pilot.  Eventually, the fire goes out and all you can see is your *charred, blackened* plane.

Right now, the story ends at "you settle it down pretty hard and BOOM!"

*having fire damage in il-2 would also be nice
