The falklands/Malvinas map retexture.
« on: August 24, 2012, 06:20:36 PM »

I've had a request by GJE52 to retexture the Falklands/Malvinas map. At first I started with an older version but instead I went with this version.

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,6163.0.html

Baco did a great job with this map and all I'm doing is bringing some more up to date textures to the map for your viewing pleasure. :)

I must say this is the most challenging map that I have worked with so far. I spent 12 hours just today alone on it. Besides having to pee or get a beer. :)

I'll start with some pics of the real places so you can see I tried to get it as close as I could. Alas, with IL2 maps we are limited as to how much we can change or do so if its not perfect, I'm sorry. :(

Of course ALL credit for textures go to the original makers and Baco and RealDarko for the map.

Here are the real pics...

The Falklands...

Argintina...

With this map is also Antartica. Now, in the load.ini it shows the month as 7 "July" So I looked at pics of Antartica in the summer and maybe like some here I didnt know that Antartica got so green or not so frozen in the summer. ???
Here are the pics...

Which now brings me to what I could do with this map. I hope you guys like what you see.

The falklands...

Argintina.....

Antartica "Summer"....

Sorry for so many pics. Like I said this was 12 hours worth of work today and I wanted to show you guys the map.
There are still things to do.

City textures need to be redone. I'm sorry, stock Il2 city textures leave a lot to be desired ???

I need someone to "cover" a few areas where my shallows textures show up on land. Tom2 has sent me the programs to do it but I have work for the next week or so. I only had yesterday and today off.

Some textures may be changed or edited for color blending before final release

GJE52 has said there is a new RAF airfield on the Falklands now and would like see if it could be added to this map.

If anyone can help please let me know.

Thank you.

WOW! Thank you Baco. I'm so glad you approve. :) You dont ever have to worry about bothering me. I'm happy to work on maps. It would be great if you can add the new airfield. I'm sure a lot of guys here would love it.
Thanks again. :)

Oh, by the way GJE52 has said he may be able to add some penguins as static objects for this map as well. :)

Looking really good Bombs, i can see alot of hard work went into that and it looks great,  i'll cross the Falklands off my projects list as we discussed and turn my head to Norway instead  ;)

I made well over 600 textures for agraciers Aleutians map before settling on the final 25 and pretty much most of them would suite the Falklands just fine so if there is anything specific that you're looking for then give me a shout and i'll dig through my library.  ;)

Thanks Max I'm not sure I'm happy with the darker green texture on the Falklands but that slot covers most of the island so I need something that is greenish maybe a little brown/tan but one that doesnt look too tiled . I fiddle with them on a ,2 ,4 or a ,-2 to try to get as little tile effect as possible. If you have some you can spare that would be great.
Thank you.

@ Kirby, I hope G can make a zombie version of the penguins. :) That would be a good mission having to fly low and kill all the zombie birds. :)

RAF Mount Pleasant

Google Earth it for the detail.  You will NEVER recreate the wind or the miserable weather that goes with the place ...

Very cool, master Bombs.
 :)
I like it, one small respectful suggestion would be: Could you try to add a few flush grassy tex on the islands mainlands, that would rock! I could help with that.
I can also help with airbases, especially since I will not test my other sim this weekend since I'm not in the mood for Beta testing.
Also option to create Bump files (I know you can do this yourself) where you wish them, I use Uufflakke's (copyright lol) method.

I am sure this map will rock and especially some Vietnam 1968 airbases or tc/WHC Hawaiian islands bases might fit very well.

I just reconned some of caberolas' Crimea map green textures would also fit in well with some Bumps.

I'm a bit lazy atm but I can help.

Great work so far! You are really a working machine.   ;)

PPS:

I found some kickassly fitting textures which would complement your work on the Falklands in agracier's Lapland autumn tex.
Hope you do not mind my suggestions, will shut up.
I think what is characteristical for the islands (Malvinas) is a grassy, "bumped" brownish to green touch and you will find a good base for that in cyberolas Crimea as well as agracier's Lapland Autumn maps. See also the links above and your own shots, I think one of them shows what I mean.
Hint..."jet Thunder"..cough..
NOW I'll sht the fuck up. :D   ;D
As I said, I can help with texture allocations in FMB and a few airbases, only no rocket science atm since my life currently starts to get real hefty/er. :D

I dug up the old map, and installed it, but it failed to open. After looking at for a few minutes, I realized that the instructions showed to stick the tga's in to the land/summer folder, instead of the forest/summer folder, where the load.ini was looking for them.

Looks good now, will look better with new textures.
