More immersive enviroment?
« on: August 25, 2012, 05:00:15 AM »

Is there anyway to make these cool object (aircraft) shadow effects and environment like in the new world of warplanes?

See the difference with classic IL2: to me it looks kinda like the aircraft is photoshopped into the picture, no real connection with the environment... kinda shadows too subtle i guess...
Hard to describe, to me it looks like a layer of "something" is missing...

If I'm not mistaken to have aircraft shadows like the ones you mean in il2 would mean to tweek il2 engine to enable them ( I might be wrong but that's my impression so far)
So it's a very hard task if it is ever done.

And again it's not sure il2 can reach this level of detail. It may be a masterpiece but it's also an old game.

To me it looks like a kind of post processing or depth of field but I think it is because the terrain doesn't have rendered lighting and is instead basically preset, however the aircraft have dynamic on-surface lighting and post processing features. Whereas IL-2 has Universal lighting, with objects and clouds and even weather effects affecting lighting on the terrain and aircraft. That would make sense considering the land will play a rather small part in the game.

To me the 3rd picture of World of Planes, the one with the Bf-109, looks very unnatural, exactly the sort of "photo-shopped onto the environment" look that you are talking about...

The Messerschmitt itself looks like one of the cheap airfix kits I used to make, all overdone rivet effects and panel lines.

Other 2 pictures look better, maybe colors a little off but pretty.

Il2 has very subtle and realistic lighting, sure it could use self-shadowing on the aircraft, the maps would look nicer if they weren't tiled textures (although they would be much harder to build) and the clouds are too small, but the overall effect is very good.

I couldn't agree more with David603;
the Messerschmidt in your example looks like a cartoon (to me) and not natural at all.  Very console-ish if you get my meaning.
IL2 is quite an old game and not without its flaws but considering it's still a very popular sim after all these years speaks volumes.  Some of the mods address some graphics issues but there's only so much the modders can do.  For example, the pilots and ground figures, still very "blocky" despite some excellent mods.

The third picture only refers to shine and shadows, I agree everything else is exaggerated..

I know what you mean.
It is something that bugs me the most about IL2. Maybe the above shown examples are not the best ones I think but the way light is rendered in IL2 looks different on objects than on land. Because of that houses look a bit like Monopoly houses when seen from certain angles.
It doesn't have to do with the quality of the created objects but for some reason objects don't match very well in the environment.
Therefor I prefer to fly in hazy weather conditions than the objects on the ground "blend" better with the environment.
In games like Wings of Prey it is better already, it looks like if they put a filter on it.

@David603,
There is a way to make clouds bigger. You need to edit some values in the Data.cld file.
I experimented with it more than a year ago.

IL-2 & COD both have wrong contrast levels

left is stock 4.10/right is corrected (with auto correction in PS iirc)

or here's an image which tells the story even better (stock on the right):
