Spanish Morocco Map - ready for download
« on: October 13, 2012, 09:58:26 AM »

It's been a while since I finished a map. But here is a new one. It is of the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco in North Africa. The main conflict fought in this area was from 1921-1926, the Rif Rebellion or Rif War, an almost successful bid of a tribal confederation to gain independence from Spain. For a time Spanish forces were on the defensive, outposts and camps being overrun and defending troops wiped out, other remaining forces being pushed back as far as Melillia (which was protected by a ring of 19th century fortifications and army camps). The Spanish forces regained the upper hand by conducting a naval landing near Alhucemas in 1925, one of the very first combined operations amphibious assaults including naval, land and air elements.

There were a number of Spanish and French aircraft used in this theater of war. There was no Rif Air Forces worth noting (except for 3 aircraft which were hardly used). So in setting up missions a bit of historical slight of hand will be necessary. There is a link to a number of very fictional Rif Air Force skins for use on several of DreamK's aircraft. The skins are easily identified by aircraft type and are intended to be regarded as captured aircraft.

The landing beaches on the map west of Alhucemas have already been provided with landing jetties, supplies, tents, buildings, supplies and and all the mess that goes with an amphibious landing. The Rif rebels constructed trench lines and artillery positions to defend the beaches, but mainly built them in the wrong area - in the Bay of Alhucemas to the east of the city, while the landings occurred to the west. Rif troops had some 300 artillery pieces.

There are a number of historical army (mainly Spanish Foreign Legion) camps and bases set on the map - at Annual, Monte Arruit, Sangangan along with isolated outposts and historical forts at Melillia and Ceuta. The architecture was often a mixture of local Maghreb and Mediterranean elements so the large cities on the map - Melillia, Ceuta, Tangiers, Alhucemas, Nador - feature both types. There were also Plazas de Toros and large churches in many cities at that time aswell as a mining operation at a railhead.

Have fun flying around. A tip is to never fly at high noon or then about. Hazy or poor visibility also looks much better landscape-wise. Nor is it recommended to fly too high. The landscape looks best between ground hugging height and 1500m. Which may not be all that far off the mark considering the possible aircraft for use at the time.

Download and unzip the map directory in
#DBW/mapmods/maps/

and add the line to your all.ini file:

A small imperfection in a texture was just pointed out to me - I've just re-uploaded the file with the correction fixed ... give it a try again ...

I up loaded the Ifni Trees - they are now in the first post above. I'm not sure if these are newer or older versions of the Ifni Trees. Newer I would suspect ...

Anyway, unzip the files and put them in the trees folder:
...#DBW/Mapmods/maps/_Tex/trees/

I didn't find the Ifni_desertTreeTL.tga file in the new download.

There were some new files in the ag/marruecos file, but no Infi_desertTree.tga file. to put into the "_tex/trees" file.

Got it ....Took "DesertTreeTL.tga" and renamed it "Infi_DeserttreeTL.tga".

Many objects in this map. It must have taken quite a while to populate.
