I'm positive on the 2 cockpits idea, would it be possible to do it the same way as the trainer position in the MiG-15UT?
(i.e. when you switch positions, you appear to be in the same place relative to the wings and the rest of the plane, yet the cockpit has changed.)

You almost gave me a heart attack when you joked about it being cancelled, though I had a good laugh.    ;D

I like Idea number one for the reason that I have a not so great running computer and I would love to fly this beautiful bird someday.

It doesn't affect fps much because when you switch cockpit, it already have a new cockpit loaded that is totally separate from the first cockpit.

could you possibly have two cockpits that you could switch between in flight kind of like a gunners seat?

That's the idea, sorry to not clearly express myself.  :-[

the way for the signs - don't have every letter/sign as separate mesh, but have mesh with few faces where you code where it is mapped - is it possible?

I've tried the idea of replacing material instead of change mesh but doesn't work.

I'll just moving on with the code work and 3d, while waiting for texture to get done. Once I hit that 255 meshes and still no solution, I might go with the 3 cockpit method and hopefully come up with a code that will automatically switch cockpit when player switching panels instead of player have to manually switching.

Just another question for the expert:

How shaky are those M61 Vulcan and GAU12 Equalizer?

On the F-18, the Vulcan was placed directly in line with the aircraft flight vector, whereas on the AV-8B, the Equalizer place in a pod off-set a bit to the left and under the flight vector.

So currently if firing gun on the F-18 barely give off the vibration of the guns (can still feel it but not as much as to deviate the flight path), while firing gun on AV-8B deviate your flight path substantially, making aiming very difficult.

The gun shake effect is moddeled perfectly fine in IL-2, I won't touch that. It's not "synthesized" but reflects the simple physical effect of recoil according to the bullet mass and velocity and it even applies the resulting force exactly at the gun's hook in time. The only reason why gun shake in IL-2 isn't as big as to be expected is that the IL-2 guns are synchronized and thus eliminate the effects of uneven recoil distribution.
What's much more fascinating on the Vulcan to me is the barrell run-up to full RPM. I've got some Vulcan on my coding shelf with this effect applied from another "sidetrack" project, will upload the code on our SVN today so you can grab it for the Hornet.

AFAIK for the Hornet the gun has no effective side yaw effect since the Vulcan is mounted in the nose. It would only slow down the jet a tad. A tad though, not like 50 mp/h.

For the F-16, the Vulcan cannon will lead the FPM to move sideways and thus the flight path. But not make the jet shake. At all.

Source is on the SVN, right into the FA-18 Hornet tree, "MGunM61A1.java" and "MGunM61A1_late.java".

I remember the F/A-18 has those leading edge cantolevers that has the feature of the craft coming out of spins automatically with hands off stick in a few revolutions IIRC. Quite a departure from the P-39 ;) Looking forward to this :)

You guys seem to put so much work in this plane,

I can't wait to try it. Not only for dogfights but the technical parts as well, (Carrier landings, air refuel, etc...)
It really seems to me that this plane will be one of the best quality plane ever made for IL-2.  :D
I'm really exited about this one guys, you rock!

Very best regards - Clint Watters
