Two New North Africa Maps - Final Stages
« on: October 22, 2012, 02:14:49 PM »

I thought members might be interested to hear of two North African maps that are nearing completion.

One is of the western Operation Torch landing zones, named Casablanca. And the other is of the Suez Canal zone. Both have already been auto-popped but still need to have several large towns/cities made (3 on each map) and sundry things like camps, depots and what not all. The same goes for the airfields. As usual with North African maps, they are sparsely populated and very arid looking. Making a reasonable depiction of the Suez Canal was something different - I mostly took info from a very detailed 1914 map which gives far different info on the size of the canal and adjacent docking areas than on present day sources like Google maps. It was also an exercise in balance to have intensively cultivated areas of upper Egypt adjacent to the harsh dryness of the desert. Hope it turns out well.

Very nice, maybe the USS Ranger will be finished by the time the Torch map is finished.

These maps represent areas I have come to love via both IL-2 and Falcon, so I definately look forward to those.
Culturally, geographically (and politically) amazing theatres.

The Suez map is in the end stages, but is encountering the typical bottleneck I experience when having to populate large cities - in this case Port Said, Port Suez, Ismalia ... it is such a chore to make them look halfway decent while keeping the objects down to a minimum. It doesn't always look very good ...

But - I do have a map just a day or so away from release hopefully. Someone is doing some beta checking and when that's OK it should be out. It will be of another arid area in this world of ours.
