So how exactly are you guys getiing them to fly in such close formation? Or are those screens of the Tomahawks & P-51s foto-chopped?

FMB. For my Tomahawk shot I placed 5 separate AI planes on whatever map and made them fly on the same path with just few meters distance from each other. I then set all the required skins and positioned myself in the leading aircraft. >Mission saved >Fly and just as it hits 100% on the loading screen you hit the Pause button. One must act swiftly as the "formation" brakes as soon as the mission loads. I then turned the mouse so the pilot will look to the left (4.11 was used for this shot), external view, some fine positioning of the angle and voila. Some slight color corrections in PS and it's all done.
You can always use the help of some online buddies too, for even better results. I don't have that much friends flying IL-2 though...
As far as I can see the Mustang "screen" is accomplished entirely by using Photoshop. Every single P-51 is cut out from original in-game screenshots and is then perfectly positioned over a cloudy sky photograph to match the real photo as best as it gets. I might be wrong though, please correct me if that's the case.

Cheers

HURRAY thanks guys!
Now let me see... for the next historical photo I'll stay in the delicious WWII times. A Messerschmitt Bf-109 of 11/JG 53 sits in the sun on Sicily a few months before the attack on Rouleau's flight. "Yellow 2" as it has been called also sports the Ace of Spades emblem on its snout. I chose this one because it has a really nice setting and I love the second 109 flying in the background. Show some creativity, camera positioning and timing skills  :) Have fun!

P.S. bonus points for an opened canopy  ;)

Best regards
