Playing with XBox360-Controller ?
« on: November 05, 2012, 06:27:31 AM »

I'm trying to set up my XBox360-Controller and I can steer and fire but would also like to set the look around in cockpit on the right stick but that don't work at this point. Maybe someone uses that too and give me a hint - it's imo not so good to use the mouse to look around that could cause precious seconds.  ;)

I use the same setup at the moment and have to use the mouse to look around. It's not so bad once you get used to it.
I have a question, though; if you set the right stick to look around (which I'm not sure is possible) how do you control the aircraft?

I use the right stick for roll and pitch and the left for rudder. Not having analogue control over the rudder is like flying a disabled aeroplane, to me, at least.

I used to do that until I bought a force feedback stick - SO much better, it shits all over the console controller and it cost £12 second hand, including postage.

Come on.

Well I think it's all a question of taste I guess I will stick to my Controller until further notice.  :P  OK I also think one can play with looking with the mouse but in combat it's not so good. I steer with left stick and dunno about the right I can't put anything on it. Fire button works.  It is possible to also look with the crosspad but it is not as smooth as with da mouse. Alright so I will play with controller ,mouse and keyboard and it actually is not that bad. Maybe I can ask what Nvidia settings u recommend - I have nice quality but when I look around I have slight "lines" in the whole cockpit not very much but maybe those can be gone too (V-Sync is on though) - but overall it looks nice. ;)

In that case I don't think you are setting up the stick properly i.e. not using it in the most efficient way - you might like it this way, which is up to you completely, of course  ;)

I have the following assigned;

Left Stick - Pitch and Roll
Right Stick Click - Change Cockpit FOV (Gunsight view toggle on 'planes with tele sights)
Right Stick - Rudder Control
Left Stick Click - cycle through "HUD" Icons
"Xbox" Button - Trigger Fire Fighting System (if installed)
Left Shoulder Button - Fire Cannon
Right Shoulder Button - Fire Machine Guns
Left Trigger - Shut Throttle
Right Trigger - Open Throttle full (activates WEP / Boost too) *note that since IL-2 counts the analogue triggers as a scale, rather than a button, hitting a trigger then letting go sets throttle at 50% - I use the keyboard - / + to set throttle most of the time.
A button - Wheel brakes
X button - Drop Bombs
Y button - Fire Rockets
B button - Not assigned

So there is my set up. After looking I realised that I use the left for pitch and roll, the right for rudder, not the other way around as I earlier said. All that happens is that I must take my hand off the rudder control to look around with the mouse - a pain in the ass, to be sure but not game breaking. It does result in some interesting nose - related rudder control from time to time, however...

I forgot about the cross pad - I might have a look at this when I get a chance. At least it is four extra inputs (maybe wheels up / down and / or bomb bay doors plus arrestor hook can be mapped here...)

I used to use a 12 button dual stick pad to play; until one of the stick heads broke off its control level/spigot that is, but using mouse to look about is a bit of pain with a pad, slightly less so than a joystick without a hat switch.
Although I did set up the D-Pad on it for quick look; behind right, up rear left, up rear right, left, right, left forward up, up/above & forward up.
But since my pad died, I dug out my old logic3 joystick, and it does fine still (after 6 years on and off usage,) mind you can still have a pad and and a stick - IL2 apparently lets you use two plugged in controllers..

But... plugging in another controller would lead to the same problem - removing your hands to interact with whatever controller it is you use to look around... Goo idea though and thanks; I didn't know that :)

If it were possible to use a toggle modifier for one of the analogue inputs (i.e. hold A button + Right stick) it would be great - but I'm sticking with the mouse - it really isn't such a big deal. Alternatively, I have a laptop and on the rare occasions I can't find my mouse (the missus pinches it because the batteries run out on hers) I have used the touch pad. I use the knuckles of my hand while holding the controller to look around - it isn't so easy as using the mouse (you can't zoom in / out for example) but it get's you by until you remember to buy the batteries she asked you to get...

Of course, face tracking software is the ultimate option...

@dinosaurJR: Thx!  Being  a dino myself  8)  I will try ur settings - sounds good and I have to improve that - at this point plane flies like stone and even Me-262 is way too slow and not as effective as it actually is (for me the hottest German plane)!  :)
