Paddle Steamer PS Ryde
« on: November 27, 2012, 10:21:26 AM »

I was browsing the internet intending to source some plans to model a paddle steamer when I stumbled across this beautiful model of PS Ryde, created by Captain Bazza, posted on Elvastower.com, a rail simulation site. Bazza has generously given permission for the model to be adapted for IL-2.

The PS Ryde and its sister ship PS Sandown were built in the 1930's to serve as passenger ferries in the Solent area of the English Channel. In 1939 they were both requisitioned by the Royal Navy, initially as minesweepers then later converted to AA ships. HMS Ryde was present both at Dunkirk and at the Normandy landings providing AA cover for the invasion fleet.

Civilian Colours

In Military guise, with added guns.

The textures need a bit of merging/optimising and re-mapping for IL-2 but other than that the LOD0 model is complete. Its fairly high poly, about equivalent to a BB model, but provided the textures are optimised I don't think that will be an issue. My thoughts were initially to do a straight conversion of the civilian model and then perhaps adapt it to replicate the wartime appearance.

I was looking for a smaller project to do after Yorktown. Looks like this is it.

What was the speed of this thing in WW2 with all those extra weight added? I asume that carried no extra armor right?

Their normal cruising speed was about 14knots with a top speed of about 19knots. I'm not certain of the exact figures.

14 knots for such ship is good enough I think. Looking forward to it.

Very Interesting find AH.
I know if you set to it it will be paddling along with a proud swagger sometime in the future!

WOW man! That looks beautiful  8) A big Thanks to Captain Bazza for such a cool classic ship.
It also reminds me of some ships from WW1 and old time river boats.

Ashes, is that a recent Google Earth pic? Chances are the ship has long been converted into razor blades by now- the GE scan may be several years old.

You may be right. The latest info posted seems to be 2010.
What a great pity if its gone.

They were beautiful ... and very similar to the cross Channel paddlers of the WW1 era ... so lots of possibilities.

Beautiful model Ashe – would be fantastic if you can import into the game & also modify to have military version as well.

She's still there - she's been laid up on the Medina for years now (near where I grew up on the IoW); she used to be a nightclub before a fire in the 80's. There was talk of restoring her but i'm not sure if anything's ever come of that.
