IL2 3D Cockpits
« on: November 29, 2012, 09:23:42 AM »

I took my Cliffs of Dover and extra copy of IL2 Disc to a Senior Software Design Engineer
who is a graduate of MIT who works for HP - I asked him if the rendering code and the hard code for the
IL2 game platform supported the 3D cockpits which appear in Cliffs of Dover he had the disc's
for about 2 weeks - His answer was yes,

and in fact, that the code in both games for "user / flyable"  cockpits was identical.

So other than fps issues why are there not yet 3D cockpits in IL2 ?

There ARE 3D cockpits in IL-2 already, since the game was first released in 2001...

Mati140 :

I may be using the term "3D" incorrectly to refer to the Cliffs of Dover cockpits
but in any case IL2 supports Cliffs of Dover quality/functioning cockpits and
I have not seen anything available at SAS, UltraPack-IL2War or M4T

I'm running 4.10.1 UP3 and keep up with a official game patches
- my game rendering settings are all set to MAX resolution and perfect quality
I have never seen ANY cockpit or cockpit repaint that looks
and functions like the ones in Cliffs of Dover.

The cockpits in the photos above are considered by most gamers to be 3D
neither Greifwerkes cockpits or Combined Bf-109 Cockpits Pack V4 are like
the cockpits in Cliffs of Dover -
Freddys P-51 and P-47 cockpits are not of the caliber of what is in Cliffs of Dover.

The attached photos are not photoshoped or altered - they are screen caps right from the
Cliffs of Dover game -

Please send me the dl link to a 109 E or Hurricane cockpit that looks exactly
like and functions exactly like the ones in my attached pictures and I will remove this post
thanks

3D is not the word you are looking for. You mean real-time shadowing and other advanced lighting effects, correct?

Yes - I was told by an alleged expert that IL2's basic code will support the Cliffs cockpits -

I know the sky, water and clouds are hard coded somewhat different in Cliffs of Dover
but that IL2 2001 platform will support the exact cockpits that appear in Cliffs of Dover  -

the light mod avail for UP3 when you take it apart is the same light that is in Cliffs game -

the canopies and cockpits react completely different to light in Cliffs of Dover
thus producing a completely life like effect -

You're mistaking the definitions. If you asked him for 3D than he answered you correctly - because both CloD and 1946 have 3D cockpits, and CloD engine is based on IL-2 engine, hence the same code. What is different is the use of self-shadowing and post effects which are not supported by old IL-2 1946 engine. So no, what you see in CloD is not possible. Besides IL-2 due to limitations and less optimization (read: due to age) does not support so high polygon counts and texture resolutions for pits (the CloD quality would take much more resources on this engine than on its own). But they are 3D and with a hand of good cockpit modder thay can have much higher level of detail than the stock pits.

I must say, our repainted mod cockpits are even more beautiful that Cliffs of Dover airplane cockpits.
I have seen and flown works of art in IL-2-1946+Mods!
Hurray for our talented cockpit painters and artists!

The ONLY diference to our game and the Cliffs of Dover is that real-time shadowing and sunshine effects on the cockpit  :(
But maybe someone one day discover a secret code to make this  happen in the old IL-2 game...
or maybe in the near future we can start modding Cliffs of Dover since it has now
been put in garbage by the company.
Anything is possible, that before people said it was not possible to use in the old IL-2 game.

We have come along way in just 4 years (+a few days) of modding the IL-2 game  8)

A programmer can't tell just by looking at those screenshots whether or not the codebase has the same capabilities.

There are pipeline, shader, and lighting hooks necessary for the kind of self-shadowing you're looking for that may EXIST in some form in the IL-2 codebase - I know Oleg used it to prototype a lot of CloD features - but they are not enabled.  Without access to the actual code for the uncompiled binaries, there is no way we can actually use them.

So effectively, the answer is, no.  We can build some pretty damn amazing 3D models for the cockpits in IL-2, but we do not have any way to enable things that are specifically needed to get the DX10/DX11 era effects you are focusing on in CloD, specifically self-shadowing and SSAO-type crevice shadowing.  IL-2 simply cannot do those things in its current form.

Currently no-one as CloD is not a stable game and its future looks bleak at best.

who is modding Cliffs of Dover?

CloD is unmoddable thanks to steam and no mod support from developers. Maybe one day...
