First world war heavy bomber - Handley Page Type O
« on: December 08, 2012, 08:22:31 AM »

Right,

I feel a brilliant addition to IL2 would be a first world war bomber plane. A real bomber, not a bi-plane with a couple of bombs. A brilliant example of this is the Handley Page Type O. 600 were built for service, and it was introduced in 1916.

Here is some of its basic info:

General characteristics
 Crew: 4 or 5
 Length: 62 ft 10¼ in (19.16 m)
 Wingspan: 100 ft (30.48 m)
 Height: 22 ft (6.71 m)
Wing area: 1,648 ft² (153.1 m²)
Empty weight: 8,502 lb (3,856 kg)
Max. takeoff weight: 13,360 lb (6,060 kg)
Powerplant: 2 × Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII inline piston, 360 hp (268 kW) each

Performance
 Maximum speed: 97.5 mph (84.7 kn, 157 km/h)
 Range: 608 nmi (700 mi, 1,120 km)
 Service ceiling: 8,500 ft (2,600 m)

Rate of climb: 23 min to 5,000 ft
 Endurance: 8 hours

Armament

Guns: 5 × 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Lewis Guns (2 on nose Scarff ring, 2 on dorsal position and 1 at ventral hatch)
Bombs: Up to 2,000 lb (907 kg) of bombs

As with all planes from this era, it is difficult to find high quality pictures as decent cameras weren't about then, and few planes survived. But here are a couple.

I believe the craft is featured in rise of flight, and here are some of the models they use for it:

So yes, I'm sure more info is available on the interweb, but I feel this would be a nice addition if someone is willing to have a go?

Thanks.

I've always wanted to have a go in one of the old heavy bombers. But pay $15 for the plane JUST FOR THE PLANE, NOT THE GAME, for rise of flight, I DON'T THINK SO!

There are already some very fine new WW1 bombers, but yes, the English are missing this Handley for their R.F.C..
I am sure one day soon it will fly in IL-2. Its a good request.
At the moment we have a German Bomber and an Italian bomber, more will arrive as soon as they are finished.

I've always wanted to have a go in one of the old heavy bombers.

Don´t worry, you can still fly into a mission flying this cool WW1 bomber....

There are some skins available that make it into a British and French captured bomber which is also very historical.
Its a cool bomber about the same size as the British Handley and it was also one of the most important bombers
to fly in WW1.

Thankyou very much for the link  :)

I do think it would go very nicely with the ol' ww1 crafts though. Possibly the gotha also? They were the first of their kinds!

Dear friends,
I had write some words now as whenever I hear something about Handley Page O/400 I think of my very good English friends Raymond Funnell and his lovely and kind wife Barbara. Sometimes in the year 1995 I worked on my RC Spitfire / span 10 feet / and I decided to make full cockpit. So I wrote to RAF Museum in Hendon to ask for some detailed photos of cockpit. After two weeks I have got a thick envelope with all needed documents from Raymond. Incredible ! Well, we became friends-the same ''frequency'',airplanes, steam locomotives and nature. We met together first time in Praque in December  1997-Raymond, Barbara, my wife Marta, my daughter Sasha and me. A beautiful meeting. So next summer holidays we spent together in Slovakia. And then came D-day-summer 2001- England-St.Albans. I am in England again /first time 1970/ now with my wife and with Ray and Barbara. It is hard to find the best words to define all we saw. Ray was saying about firm Handley Page as he finished school there and worked there untill 1975 and then he worked in RAF Museum in Hendon. He was a member of Handley Page Association, he told me about their project to build a replica of HP O/400 and showed me a few parts of cockpit which he made in his workshop. We visited museum in Hendon, Cosford, Shuttleworth, Duxford and other interesting places. Ray loved steam locomotives and he started to build his model of railway. I like locomotives too. We spent really beautiful holidays.Last evening Ray said: Jan you are like our family.I can say that I and Marta, we fell it too.
Unfortunately, two weeks later Barbara phoned that Ray died in age 66 years. I had to go there and say last-Good Bye,Ray. And all that time I stood next to Barbara and she held my hand. We were family. Ray had one wishing and Barbara later wrote: I took earrings and rings which I have got from Ray during our matrimony and Ray´s urn. I sat to hellicopter and we flew above old Handley Page airport. There is Ray´s grave.
I miss Ray very much but we are still in connection with Barbara and she visited us in 2010. I am younger than Ray but this year I was retired althogh I still work. My first grandson will be 4 years old in January and loves airplanes and locomotives. He knows Spitfire of course. My Spit does not exist already but all part of cockpit I have and pilot too. I have also two locomotives-steam and dieselelectric-and about 15 wagons/ HO /. I make now railway station for my grandson as Chrismas surprise. I did not show him Il-2 yet because one fanatic enough at  home. That is my toy!

That is all and Merry Christmas

Excuse my poor English

Well, if they make the Handley type O, then a dogfight between this German one and the O would be impossible to resist... :P
