Frost on canopy/windscreen
« on: December 09, 2012, 10:27:10 PM »

More of an idea than a request...

I recently discovered and downloaded the very cool J7W1 and have been having a blast scrambling up to intercept B-29's from Iwo Jima.

On my last sortie I noticed at a certain altitude the pilot has an oxygen mask!  I dove and climbed watching the mask appear and dissappear.

Soon I began to wonder what else could "appear" at different altitudes?

I think it would be neat to see frost develop on the corners of your canopy as you climb.

I don't know if its possible... But maybe even several different altitudes?  Imagine being in a B-17 and at 20,000 feet a light frost develops around the edges of your window pane... At 21,000 feet the frost has grown a bit.. At 22,000 the frost is noticeably thicker... And then as you descend it lightens back again!

It would certainly be a major task to retrofit all the planes... But if its possible it might be a cool feature that would add immersion for some of the new WIP planes!

Anyways... Just an idea... Hope it inspires someone!

It could be based off the old Windscreen Oil damage mod, but I highly doubt it would look good.

If triggered by the same mechanic that operates the pilot's oxygen mask it would probably be an ON/OFF effect aswell.
If triggered by altitude, it could be different.
Biggest problem would be to make it a gradual appearing/dissappearing effect IMHO.

Makes sense, especially when diving from high alt to lower for b&z where the rapid change in alt would fog screen, at least somewhat if not vented in the pit.  Accusim models this in their Spit and its a nice feature.  I could only imagine dealing with it in IL2, especially online where high alt to low B&Z is the norm when enemy tracer fire is seen down below.

Plus I think it would vary according to plane, most, even WW2 planes I believe, had the equivalant of a defroster of some sort, though I know they didn't always work well (especially the early P-38F,Gs over Europe-thier cockpit heat system was notorious on long range escorts). I don't know the tech basis of that though.

The Jets will have a more effective defrost system, but I don't know what the technical basis of it is. Fighter pilots in modern (jet age) air combat can't have that messing up thier view, as they change altitude so fast.
