 Well, ronan323, I guess if it was ever made, it would make a good jumping off point for a career as an observer/gunner. Then later the player could graduate to another type, and fly it. If one ever appears, I'd certainly d/l it for curiosity sake alone.

cheers

I think the only reason I'd get this is so my sis can fly it while I gun down bogeys in the front... ;D
My sis also agreed it'd be awesome to have this in Il-2... I can see us ruling the skies of LAN in our house. 8)

I saw a interview about a Nightfighter ace from USA joining the eagle squadron and was posted on a Defiant equipped unit before USA joined the war. They transferred to the Beufighter but he refused this since he thought a training in two engined planes ultimately would bring himself to bomber duty.
So he stuck to the defiant and was used as target tug pilot among other rutine missions. He joined up with USAAF and eventually flew the P-61. But when the interview was taken he had his fondest memories about the Defiant. He did shoot down 3 planes on on mission in pacific .
The problem with Defiants you can easily see in CLOD they are useless and fly as bombers, Defiant pilots in early engagement was aggressive. You will never see a Defiant perform its duty in this game. It will only fly like a bomber with no bombs.

Me too. I would definately fly this bird. Let's be fair there are plenty of other planes in our glorious game that are cannon fodder. Why not have another lol :)

You'll also need some other mod to get turret off - it will move its guns forward and than the pilot can shoot - this way was it in real. Unless you have this for you or for AI it is useless. However, if you solve this, I'll give you my +1 ;)

Koty you are right, but the Defiants were not used that way; their tactical doctrine did not allow for the pilot to fly like a fighter and use the turret turned forward, that would not make any sense at all to strap a heavy turret with 4x .303 machine guns on a single engined fighter if you already have two fighters that carry twice the punch without a heavy turret and a heavy second crew member...
so the RAF wanted the Defiant to be used like a siege turret of sorts against Bombers while the Hurris and Spits tangle with fighters;
of course it did not turn out that way;
but again, the doctrine did not go for the pilot using the turret moved forward...

btw, with a competent AI gunner, this could work; I have shot down quite a few enemies (or better gunners in my planes did), be it in B-25s, B-24s or PB4Ys...

flying and tactics are a little bit different... ;)
of course if the AI could handle this is another question....

From Wikipedia:

Quote
The gunner could rotate the turret directly forward and transfer firing control of the guns to the pilot, with the guns firing along each side of the cockpit canopy. However, in practice this was rarely done as the turret's minimum forward elevation was 19° and the pilot did not have a gunsight.

lol, so it would almost be a kind of 'schrage-musik' weapon if the pilot controlled it.
interesting - i never knew this :D

It was used as long range anti-bomber fighter and reconiassance airplane (route England-Norway and so)

And it scared the crap out of the Pilot. I read about many Defiants Pilot, no one mention this feature at all. Beeing as heavy as it was I can't imagine that would made any difference in a Dogfightscenario
