P2V-5F with nose turret
« on: December 13, 2012, 02:55:35 AM »

 P2V-5
Fitted with Emerson nose turret with two 20 mm cannon replacing solid nose of earlier versions, while retaining dorsal and tail turrets. New, larger, jettisonable tip tanks, with traverable searchlight slaved to nose turret in front of starboard tip-tank and AN/APS-8 radar in nose of port tip-tank. AN/APS-20 search radar under fuselage. Later aircraft featured glazed observation nose and MAD gear in place of nose and tail turrets, and revised crew accommodation, with many earlier aircraft refitted.[29][30] Dorsal turret often removed. 424 built.

This is the cockpit

I believe the current one we have is a very well done franken plane (partially) wiht a partial MAD stinger and a top turret. I Don't believe the authors of the project have any plans to expand the type into the other versions....unfortunately. Of course, we could always hope for somebody to just make a different version or two of the aircraft using it, but I wouldn't hold my breath. It should be noted that the P2V did see action in Korea, and its ground attack capability was very useful, if I remember correctly.

  I'm also hoping that we get some skins for this machine. Beebop is making me one for a project (sorta like the one on the model box) but it may be a bit as I wait for the aliens who abducted him to finish their experiments and bring him back. ???

    On the chance somebody decides to ever modify the current plane, I'm going to post some stuff regarding it. We've got the (I think) P2V-7, later redesignated P-2H in the early 60s, by which time the dorsal turret had been removed.

The original design had a twin .50 turret with a comic book looking nose perspex. Very few of this config built.

THere were several nose configs during the 40s to early 60s. I like the solid nose wiht the 6 fixed 20mm;
      "P2V-2 (and -3)  Second production model, powered by two 2,800 horsepower (2,100 kW) R-3350-24W engines driving and three-bladed propellers. Nose turret replaced by "attack" nose fitted with six fixed 20 mm cannon. First eight aircraft retained Bell tail turret fitted with twin .50 machine guns, with remaining aircraft using Emerson tail turret with twin 20 mm cannon. 80 built."

A gun nose P2V as seen from an A-26 (note the removed turret on the A-26).

This video of stills shows several of the early models, both with fixed guns and turrets.

THe version with the twin 20mm in the nose you are speaking of would also be pretty interesting with lots of firepower:
"P2V-5
424 built.[31]"

Kinda nice to have 20mm guns in nose and tail turrets. More effective v. Mig-15s.

Here's a great shot of said P2V wiht the P-2V-7,P-2H that replaced it.

I think we shall have to do with the nice P-2H that was improvised very effectively. I've flown it and attacked ships, and it's nice. Coulda used those 6 20mm, but it's a nice machine. May have to do a little cheating as far as the time period it served in though.
