Rivers
« on: December 16, 2012, 05:54:51 AM »

Sorry for bothering again, but i've run into some problems... :( :(

First Im new in modding so forgive me if I ask stupid questions i tried to figure it out or find a solution but it wasn't succesfull.

So I've started to make a full hungarian map. I get nice datas from microdem but rivers absolutelly not visible. So I've started to draw it by my hand with pencil tool all point is at least 3 pixel wide. I've drawn the biggest rivers like Danube and the "Tisza" and 3 lakes. I did not drawn all rivers because first i wanted to know is it working or not.

My problem is that the avarage height above sea level of the Carpathian basin (where Hungary lays) is 100-200m, in the microbem greyscale image the lowest lands are grey.

When I've launched the full mission builder I've seen that all of the rivers is under the land textures.

My questions are these:

Can I put water textuers above sea level? if yes how

Or how can i change the land on the microdem grayscale image to get the lowest fields be in 0 meter/ shown black.

Thank you in advance for the replies!

Possible solution:

1. Scale down Mymap_c.tga to the size of map_h.tga (a quarter size).

2. Copy rivers from that scaled down file, to a new layer in map_h.xcf  .

3. Increase the size of rivers there about one pixel , fill the selection with  RGB=0 and join  this layer with map_h. layer.

4. Select the surroundings of rivers and make gaussian blurr . Save new map_h.tga .

So you wil obtain the rivers at zero level, witn banks smoothly adjusted to the surrounding  terrain. Without the blurring, you can obtain the rivers in canyons.

It is possible.
Take for instance the default Slovakia map. In the mountainous area, northeast part of the map, there are several lakes above sea level.

Hi There,

Another tedious but more satisfying method is to use the Blur function in between Peek and Fill in the fmb +

It takes time but does take away the jagged edges and canyon effect.

I'm currently doing that now on a project.

Uzin 's advice  was  very interesting as well.  :D

Cheers Kirby

What Uzin said completelly worked so Big thanks for that!!

Now its time to jump into the real work to draw all rivers/lakes up to the map_c, and learn how to make 2048 textures;) ;)

Thank you for all the replies!!

Well, I'm not a map maker, but I'm curious.
Is it impossible to make rivers or some kind of water that are not at the same level of sea?

Yes of course it is possible. Not to mod rivers at sealevel, has some disadvantages. Ships cannot drive on it. And - I guess - there is a problem with crossing bridges, too.

But the advantage is, that - for my opinion - rivershores look more realistic. Currently I would prefer making rivers not at sealevel at landscapes with highlands... but I must say, I am impressed how plain it looks now by blurring the stuff as Uzin recommended.

Re original post. I don't think your river is "under" the land. Riverbed texture is spread out over hills and valleys which are higher than the flat surface of the water. The bright green and white texture is normally UNDER the surface of the river, but the hills are forcing it up and it has become visible.

It is totally possible to have rivers and lakes at far higher than sea level. You just have to keep height variations within the water itself from happening.
