Blohm and Voss BVP-194 Asymetric heavy fighter
« on: December 19, 2012, 05:42:15 PM »

Another "Franken" plane on the way:

This time it's the BVP-194 asymetric fighter. I feel for a game entitled "1946" it's severeyly lacking in German secret projects, of which there were hundreds proposed. The BVP-194 is a favourite of mine; it's an asymetric heavy fighter, with a heavy cannon armament and composite propulsion (radial and turbojet).
Luft '46 entry:
http://www.luft46.com/bv/bvp19401.html
The 3d model is nearly complete; next will be landing gear (currently missing), armament, damage model, cockpit and textures. Most parts are stock, with the exception of the basis aircraft, the brilliant P-38 Trident, and the wings, which are from the Sea-Fury, so thanks to:
Quote
-first to 1Cmaddox for the original meshes and code
-to GJE-52 for the 3d modifications
-Just a few bits to crazyflak for the slot and for a few cheats to get it out
-a big bunch of credit to the creators ((BBury/Gibbage/Monguse) of the UI P-38 pack, since I borrowed quite a few hooks and weapon configurations from them
-Another big piece of credit to Tony Mucaro for the idea and inspiring plastic model.
For the trident and
Quote
Flakiten - 3d parts, UV mapping, Aircraft Slot, Class tweaking
Nightshifter - Base Skin (thanks!!!)
Fatduck - exporting tool
DrJones - exporting tool
Kumpel - matrix tool
for the Sea-Fury.
-------------------
I'd also like to edit the flight model to get some sounds and effects working on the Turbine, and the centre of roll to a midpoint between the pod and wings if possible. There's also and odd patch of texture handing below the fuselage I can't see to eliminate.

What a nice idea for a new addition to the game. It's one of those out-of-the-box designs that seemed to sprout up so often during the last days of the war, as if thinking up outlandish designs might save the day.

Asymmetric designs such as this proved to have excellent manoeuvrability characteristics. I think many of the "46" designs weren't as 'desperate' as they were forward thinking - something even the Nazi's preferred to stay away from and keep with traditional designs.

FANTASTIC! What a good looking mod aircraft. You did great. I really enjoy these "what if Luft ´46" airplane
designs and future concepts.
I will be waiting with much enthusiasm for this cool bird to fly in the game.

All offending posts have been removed.

Nibula, you're being publically warned by a SAS team member: if you have nothing educated to say, you can keep your opinion to yourself. Drop the attitude.
We will see if any other actions will have to be taken in response to your conduct.

Mikoyan99, keep up the good work, modding it's a long and difficult road, but it's full of fun and interesting discoveries.

Ooh, don't worry, it'll take far more than that to discourage me! I'm an engineering student and i'm quite use to having to defend my work. Cheers for the support though.
------------------------------------------
The design isn't my own - to give a brief summary, it was a design towards the end of the war by Blohm and Voss engineer Richard Vogt. The basic theory, as others have mentioned, is that the design gives you excellent maneouverability, visiblity, and versatility for a compact package. The obvious issue is that the centre of gravity and transverse centre of lift don't quite line up, so you get a couple pulling one side of the aircraft down or another. For small disturbances, you can use trim tabs to balance the aircraft, and for larger cases, such as this one, the torque from the piston engine helps to balance the forces.
The thing I don't understand is the drag - the skin friction drag would be higher on the port side than the starboard; the only thing I can think of is the engine thrust, also off centre, balances this as well.
A similar aircraft, by the same engineer, was the BV 141 reconnaisance aircraft. This did fly:

Could I also ask a moderator to change my "Status" to modder, so I can start posting betas etc?
