Landing Order
« on: December 20, 2012, 02:04:51 AM »

I don't know if this is possible, but I've often thought it would be very useful if as wing commander, you could order the other aircraft in your flight to land as soon as possible at the nearest airfield, or even on a stretch of road.

The last may be a bit of a stretch for the game, but a command to land would be very useful.

There is a command to land: navigation orders\return to base.

The problem is they are going to return to original base, not landing in the nearest field avalable.

Right, and what if there is no take-off and the mission starts in the air? Where would the planes then land? How would a home base be defined?

I think that in normal missions, there is no way the machine ai can make out which bases are friendly or enemy. In off-line play airfields will be in a player's mental map as enemy or friendly, but how to let the ai know which are which?

That's also a reason why maybe just 'land at nearest base' command might be easier to implement ...

In all missions, AI has got a landing airfield if there is one and is used in mission generation.

AI doesn't know which is or not friendly. But in the mission, AI follows his waypoints. If there is a landing waypoint, with "return to base" order, AI plane will go there.

... I wish damaged (or short of fuel) AC could land in emergency, that is with the highest priority, like in real life ... instead of having to wait for their turn and most of the time belly land somewhere around their base when this could have been avoided ...

+1000 to mr. Agracier's request

It's disappointing when you see IA crashing on the ground while you land, even though you've given the RTB & break order.
