I'm a bit surprised to see noone's mentioned the JAS-39 Gripen yet. The same layout as the Eurofighter, but soooo much smaller. When sweden took part in NATO wargames the Griffin performed very well against german Mig-29s among others.
I personally think it's not as intimidating as it's predecessor, the JAS-37 Viggen (english: Thunderbolt), partly due to it's smaller size, but none the less it's a pretty looking aircraft. They both are actually ^^

Still, i think the combat record for the F-15 speaks for itself. I'd go with the Eagle...

A few Griffins.

And a 37 as well.

You can clearly see the difference in size....

I see the F-35 fly over my house almost every day and just the way she looks, awe. She's larger than I thought she was, wished I could still go on base to get a close look though.

Very good points there Thorsten.

Dear god I dislike this thing with a passion. Australia, and now Canada (my new, adopted home) are helping fund this peice of crap. It's like Dr Porsche went from building tanks to Aircraft. Lets make an overly complicated machine that is superior in everyway except maintainence and payload...oh and fuel range... (althought the F-35 actually does have better fuel range then the F-18F :s) Dont get me wrong it's a big step, and is bound to have problems, but holy crap the budget blowouts and issues are insane. Whats worse is Australia buys an new fleet of F-18Fs, replacing our F-18A's and F-111's and then we're going to fork out even more for 20 or so of these? We were apparently considering the Su-30, only issue was IIRC mating Nato weapons systems to russian hardpoints didnt go down to well.
We wanted the F-22, but were told no, due to top secret issues etc,etc and the fact the F-22 has been withdrawn from US service (the fuck was with that anyway?)

Oh and interesting tid bit I just discovered:

Indian AF Su-30K during the Cope India exercise. The Flankers soundly defeated US Air Force F-15Cs during this exercise, exploiting not only superior BVR radar/missile capabilities, but also the TKS-2 datalink, used to network flights of Flankers (US Air Force image) from this page http://www.ausairpower.net/flanker.html

First I heard of this as I live outside Langley AFB, VA and see them fly over my house everyday. Someone forgot to tell the U.S. Air Force to get rid of them.

It hasn't been withdrawn from service, just production. It cost an extra 150,000,000 more than an eagle for similar capability.

The withdrawl from service was something I misread, wasnt 100% sure. The 'wouldnt let us have the F-22' part was actually due to a US Congress bill that was passed, and then when the Australian airforce was given the okay..we went for the F-35 because it had better ground/maratime options. I was just going off the top of my head this morning when I wrote all this, so please feel free to fill in the gaps as you guys see fit.

I'm not Grant, I'm enjoy being enlightened with the actual facts as you guys have brought forth. I just find the money spent on both the F-22 and F-35 projects could have been better spent elsewhere.

They're back up though. It was the filter. This same problem had been seen in the F-16 (apparently) but it never made the news, they used the original F-16 flight suit which had a defect.
