I want to build a better beach.
« on: December 28, 2012, 07:26:56 PM »

When trying to make a beach, or anywhere two contrasting textures meet,
the edge tends to look straight or jagged like the teeth of a saw.

It has been giving me fits on my latest joint project with Mixx.

I want to have a somewhat realistic transition where the jungle meets the sand.
Here are some examples of what I am talking about.

This is what I am working on now.

First, this is VERY beta! The individual textures were deliberately not color blended so that they would be more visible.

The first pic is the transition texture painted onto an island on the Net3summer stock map.

In this pic, I have used a jungle texture to fill in the middle with a beach texture around the outer edge.

I realize that some of the join lines are somewhat blurry but with some tweaking I think I can improve this. Still, it looks more realistic than straight lines and right angles.

Does this seem like a viable method to transition between dark and light textures?

Has this been tried before and if so, how did it turn out?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have struggled with that also. But you are giving me some ideas to try on how to deal with contrasting textures that meet. I am going to work on one tile that will make that transistion better.

Hi Spdr. I had the same problem and what I did was use this texture for close to or even up to the water.....

Then if you have unlocked FMB you can very carefully add this texture to certain areas for some sand....

Not every island has sandy beaches on every coast. Some have palm trees and vegitation very close to shore.

Just a suggestion. I hope this helps or gives you another idea.
Another thing I try to do is always put a  ,2  on the end of load.ini entry of the textures so they dont become too blurry when flying close to the ground.

I love that texture! I made a version of MiSp Pacific Islands using that texture! To reduce the tiling effect, I rotated a copy 90 degrees
and painted it over the top of the first one wherever it repeated. It worked out well.

Maybe we can release multiple versions.

I believe it is one of Agracier's Spain textures. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Once I get the details of the shape of my transition texture sorted out, I will try that one in the green areas.

Should be interesting.

The way the transitional texture is made, since the two areas contrast so much. it is relatively easy to swap out any other textures
for the two parts. Clever use of the color select tools and some experimentation with the threshold level will get you where you need to go.
Save a master copy as layers and you can switch them as you wish to blend with any map you are working on.

Sounds like you have an idea for your new map now. :)  I'm not sure but I think it is Agraciers. You know how it goes with texture... Someone makes them then we all edit them to fit another map. :) Credit to all our texture makers. Without them where would we be? :) Let me know if you need any textures. I have been collecting them for years. :)

This must drive the mod pack guys crazy!

So many variations of the same texture!

It has to be that way though so they blend well together.

What you need is what i call a 'transitional' texture to bridge the beach texture with the grass texture and then blend them.

A pm is on it's way. ;)

What I think sometimes will be helpful in addition is playing with the size of the textures on the map by marking them with ",2" ",4" or even "-2", "-4" in some cases. I see me fighting with this problem as well next year as I intend to mod a big island map which already exists.

Cheers

Give yourself a hand!

That is your shallow water texture!

Tom2,

I thought so as well! In the game however, the way the texture is placed does not change size when you

change that number in the load.ini. It will however change the resolution and that is what kinda ruined it for me.
