Trouble mapping skins onto wings in Gmax and scaling in Gmax
« on: January 08, 2013, 05:46:08 PM »

I've got two problems in Gmaz at the moment - one is that I can't get the 3D models to scale in more than one direction; if I scale say the x-direction, then the y, the act of re-sizing y removes the scaling on x.

The other problem, and closely related, is UVW mapping. I've got the unwrapping working, but I can't get the skins on each wing section to line up properly, so that panel lines don't line up; i'm also getting distortion effects (all w values are 0, this may be part of the problem? mapping in 2d only?).

You can see the problem here (left wing), the circles and lines were drawn on straight, with the exception of those for the centre wing section. They're also nominally lined up with the UVW maps supposedly both at 1:1 scale by a single coordinate point.
I had to double the length of the wings in .hier file to get them the right length, as well as increasing the chord by a factor of 1.2. The 3d models are therefore unstretched which i'm sure isn't helping, hence the first issue.
I need to submit a map for skinning tommorow evening, so if you have any idea your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Mapping in Gmax is almost identical to mapping in 3Dmax. You must ALWAYS first reset the Xform of your modified meshes before mapping - if not you'll get into troubles with the mapping axis and deformations.
Select your mesh , go to the object tool (the small hammer on your right hand menus pad), push on resetXform button then reset selected (it appears in teh lower part of this same menue pad when you push the resetXform button).
Then click right mouse click on your mesh and select Convert to / Convert to editable mesh
Then go to the modifier list (the blue halfrainbow among these same menu pad buttons) and, if needed, flip the polygons that appear inverted (often occurs if you have mirrored pmeshes or used boolean cut) - if you do not do that, they will appear transparent in Il2.....
Then go to your modifier list and select Unwrap UVW  - select your faces (here GMax has much less possibilities than 3Dmax where you can select by elements, without backfacing etc...) then choose your mapping axis (averaged normals is always the first choice to test) and press planar map, then go to the edit button on this same Unrwap UVW menu to check teh result and move your mapping to its position in your upbuilding skin bmp (here too 3dmax allows to manipulate the mapped part by offering a mapping submenu on the edit pan and allowing to automatically produce top/bottom or left right or box mapping)
Good luck

That worked, thanks.
