dividing Carrier deck into 3 pieces and UV mapping
« on: January 10, 2013, 09:54:30 PM »

My USS Essex 1960 MOD pack
https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,24177.0.html

uses " 1 " texture file about its flight deck in 2048x512 size letter box one.

The flight deck 3D msh is divided into 3 pieces as DeckN/DeckC/DeckT.
But I made them once "1" piece and make UV mapping for this texture.
In this way , we can draw deck textures easily. mapping size equal , lines are straight , no need to care such things.

But that way , looking "low-rezolution" in the game is the problem.
I and others need more sharp textures.
To solve it , I need re-UV mapping onto 3 texture files for each DeckN/DeckC/DeckT.
Which way to keep its easy drawing , divide UV mapping?

Would the low res issues besolved with the new HD mod?

It is possible to split the UV in 3 parts but not really recommended. If you really want to do it (as I've did this before) is to map the entire UVW first, getting the shape and proportion correct. Then split the UV map into 3 parts and use a test texture to allign the mapping (Which usually give you 99% desirable result). This would be really hard for the texturer to texture the ship. However, with the help of multiple "drawing boards" feature of Adobe Illustrator, ones can assemble all 3 parts on 3 connected drawing boards (still can be save as 3 separated files) and make texturing a lot easier.

The decks of stock carriers use a low resolution texture for the basic deck colour and use overlays to provide high resolution of lines, numbers and other deck markings. This minimises the texture sizes while providing high resolution to points of detail.
Deck lines and numbers on HMS Illustrious are a good example of this.

Looking at the image posted by Western -- Dashed lines only need a single dash/space on the texture which can then be tiled over the length of the deck. Same with other repeating line details.
