Im surprised by the resurgence of interest in this story, its well known amonst aviation enthusiasts but I guess with the recent book its attracted more mainstream attention.
It was also far from a one off event, there was a number of 'let them go home' stories from both sides.

There was a news story recently and it made a headline on the daily mail. I found out in the mighty VIIIth airforce museum, about three months before the article ran.

AH yes!  ;D That "Stigler" guy, what a great Luftwaffe chap he was. That was very gentlemanly-like of him to
 escort that B-17 out.
His name has become quite famous over the years , specially with comedy jokes about WW2 Germans.
When there is a joke or tv-series about Germans (Example= Monty Python), the German guy is usually called "Stiggler"  ;D

 Good ol´Stiggler!

Look at this... http://www.flyingcarrot.com/Brown%20And%20Stigler.htm

Charles Brown and Franz Stigler are friends; so close that they call themselves brothers.

German hospitality... Both those men died only 2 months or so apart... They were very close.
