Junkers D.1
« on: January 17, 2013, 06:18:40 AM »

The Junkers D.1 was the 1st all-metal fighter to enter service in ww1 and help lay the way most of the planes on IL-2 and this is why it should be on IL-2.

Quote
The Junkers D.I was a fighter aircraft produced in Germany late in World War I, significant for becoming the first all-metal fighter to enter service. The prototype first flew on 17 September 1917. During tests, the D.1 was felt to lack the maneuverability necessary for a front-line fighter, but was judged fit for a naval fighter, and a batch of 12 was ordered. These were to have been supplied to a naval unit by September 1918, but instead equipped the same unit redeployed to the Eastern Front after the Armistice.

Well, actually the Junkers J-1 was the world's first practical all-metal aircraft.
it was nicknamed the "Blechesel" ... The "Tin Donkey" or "Sheet Metal Donkey"   :D
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_J_1

But you are also correct by saying The D-1 was the first all-metal Fighter in the world.
Only 41 aircraft were built by the end of  the war and it did not change the outcome of WW1. A rare
machine to be found on the german airfields. It was considered for its time to be very futuristic and
you could even say it was a "Luft`1919" aircraft.
Like the futuristic looking Horten-229 jet fighter was considered a Luft`46 aircraft.

A great design that proved metal skin to be good, unlike the dope-and-cloth popular at the time ;)

What good is metal when the pilot is exposed? German engine development was too poor to support these machines.

I agree Verhangnis. However, it would be another unique kill to ad to one's late war score.

cheers

I was talking about it being the start of metallic planes, and I know the engines were bad :)

But it was an improvement

whether it was good or not, is irrelevant.
a worthy request, imho.   :)

Respectfully submit that since it did not see combat against the state-of-the-art Allied fighters of the day (Camel, Snipe, SE5, SPAD XIII) we don't KNOW whether it was any good or not.

sure, we don't know, but if we could build one with a guess-timated FM, then we could maybe get a rough idea of how it might've performed against its contemporaries.
granted, it would still all be a bit of a guessing game, lol...  :P
