Why 4.09?
« on: January 26, 2013, 08:08:02 AM »

I'm pretty new to the Il-2 modding community, and I've been running DBW since I first reinstalled Il-2 last year.  I'm just sort of wondering what the big deal is with 4.09 and what the advantages are to using it.  Clearly there must be good reasons since so many people use that version, but what are they?  I want to know if it'd be worth it to me to have a separate 4.09 install and what the advantages and disadvantages of 4.09 are.

for most still running 4.09, you'll find that, by and large, it's a group of guys that started with modding 4.09 and invested a lot of time and effort on that install.
they did not want to let that all go to waste, to just drop it and move on to a new one.
i suill have an old 4.09 install myself, but tbh, i don't really use it anymore, it's basically taking up HD space, but i still hang on to it for, perhaps, sentimental reasons only.
other 409 users will have their own reasons, but this to me is the general feeling.
for a guy like you, who is new to the scene, there really is no reason to go backwards. you are missing nothing, i assure you.
it's the kind of thing only someone who has come a long way with an older version can explain.
there may be a handful of mods that work only for 4.09, but they aren't many, as i said.
by all means, you can install a 4.09 version, i don't want to put you off that, but why complicate your life learning an older method, which doesn't incorporate all the great new features since then... simply not worth it for a newcomer, honestly.
others will likely give more reasons soon, but that's my take.  ;)

Tks Eugene, I agree with what you said.

- I use UP2.01 from the beginning.
- I do not want to waste my time to reinstall everything. I know I would never equivalent. My version was so changed and yet it is very stable.
- Some older mods do not exist in the current versions.
- In first, the proposed new (jet, helico, radar, other operational theater WWII, ...) in versions 410/411 I'm not interested... not really!

It is a choice! Everyone does not run with the same model car ... It's the same with IL-2, everyone does not play with the same version.
The only point in common between us, the fun of playing IL-2!

I also like the 4.09 version, because it is compatible with more mod.The overall effect is more comprehensive than 4.10.4.11.   8)

For me, it's the missions. I have hundreds of tried and tested 4.09 missions and it can be a real drag having to re-create them all for a new version of the game. They never seem to work out as good in 4.10 for some reason. I have a 4.11 install but rarely use it. 4.09 is still my favourite version.

The process and experience of writing a good mission can be compared to building a motor car. Getting the timing right; the ambience; the mix of aircraft; the interaction with the map and the terrain; is an experience and way of interacting with the game that is equally; if not more; satisfying than flying someone else's mission. Sharing that with others on-line takes it to another level again.

It's a bit like the difference between building a car and driving one. There is really no comparison IMHO.

The good thing is; it becomes an obsession; so I just keep writing them...

Cheers

Long Live the 4.09 Rebellion!

For me it's my Jurassic period ASUS A7N8X based computer that just won't die. It can barely even get 4.09 up and moving.

But 4.09 has ricochets. God I love those ricochets.

Big part of 4.09 mods is compatible with 4.11 patch which i use, that's why.
