Help with map_c (solved)
« on: January 26, 2013, 11:01:37 AM »

Today i was trying to smooth the shore in my map by editing the map_c with blur tool in gimp and when i loaded it in Il-2 i got this some kilometers above the south edge:

That is really odd.

It looks like how it would usually look at the end of a map.

However I presume that this is not the end of the map correct .

Correct, this is not the end of map, the edge is +10 km far south in this direction. After long hours experimenting i noted that if you make the coast of map_c too blurred strange things like this happen, so i reverted to my old map_c and used a brush tool to manually paint the shallow water using RGB70 and surfs using RGB96 and get rid of this, althoug the result was not perfect than i wish due to manual painting.

after making any new map_c I just blur it twice using the blur tool in gimp.

like Kirby mentions,I also just blur map_c twice with the Gimp blur tool
I only blur the spots I work on,as constantly bluring the whole map_c will eventually degrade your landscape by bluring too much

I work in layers, each new addition on a layer of it's own
so just that layer of new work needs bluring

Are you using Perfect settings ?
or excellent settings ?

it may be a texture issue
is it a texture you made that your using for water, shoreline or whatever  in the load.ini ?

could you post your map_c to take a look at ?

I've seen this before, but can not remember right now the cause...  :(

Boomer, the textures used by waters and shore are stock, i've made only land and river textures. I don't think it's a texture problem since this issue had disappeared when i reverted my map_c to the old version. When i've made the shore manually using brush tool with certain RGB values i have got no problem.

Unfortunately, i have discarded my troublesome map_c. But i can send my current version, it's the same coastline, but harder transition lines. I'm using excellent mode, next month i wish to purchase a new machine that will make me able to use perfect mode. I live in a 3rd world country and a good computer with a decent processor, memory and 3d graphics card capable of shadering water without fps loss are difficulty to acquire for a average university student like me. Next month perhaps i can get a good machine to mod the game better, i hope.

Now talking back about the problem, i think it's a map_c issue when you excess blur the coast. To make better shores with shallow water, reefs and surf the best is to carefully paint the coast with brush tool, using adequate rgb values (1-94 to shallow water, 95-127 to surf lines). I've tested other map_c version made with this method and got no issue.

looking at your map_c.tga IMHO
It seems to me not blurred enough,or not being blurred right maybe
It looks to blocky at the edge of the water and land

I get softer edges when working with map_c
I am comparing it with a map I have where I have done extensive underwater shoals and stuff
small area's of land just breaking the surface of the sea to have waves crash on them with a lot of underwater shallow water shoal textures to look at

On this map_c the convergence of land to water is very soft looking
the softer it is the better the effect

blurring land with hills and such will degrade the hills and such
but edges of land that meets water
and water meeting land can be blurred quite a bit
I do it in stages looking at results between blurring sessions

I also use Noise/pixelate ,then blur a couple maybe three times
for those small area's just off shore where a ship could strike rocks  :D

use select by color,select white
invert the selection then blur three times

Reverse procedure
,select black,then invert
blur three times

then compile and look at results
it may help,or will let you know at least quickly if it is a step in the right direction

Cheers

Many thanks for the help Boomer, I'm making this map for learning experience purposes, i'm a noob in modding and this is a try to learning the principles. I have finished this a week ago and get very satisfied with the results in game, although it can be much better. One day when i get more spare time i will try to make better beaches (i want to add some shallow water to resemble reef barriers too). In the future when i get more experienced i wish to make a more serious historical maps to share in the community, particularly about forgotten theatre areas such as South America and South Atlantic. I love Agracier's South American maps, but i guess we can have more of it, and I want to have a try myself to help this community to expand fronts. I'm grateful for the help and support of yours in this effort.

Regards

I used to get that effect on my old computer about 10 KM from the map edge as well. It's a hardware issue, I think. Not much you could really do if that was the case, except upgrade at some point.
